Arsenal vs Southampton: Premier League preview

Arsenal host Southampton at the Emirates on Sunday. The game will be a fifth consecutive match at the Emirates for the Gunners, who are in search of a sixth straight win in all competitions.

Arsenal beat CSKA Moscow 4-1 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday. Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette both scored braces.

Arsenal have been in immense form at home this season. Manchester United and Manchester City are the only sides to pick up more points at home than the Gunners, who have won 12 of their 16 at the Emirates.

In their last Premier League outing, Arsene Wenger’s side beat Stoke City 3-0. Despite an improvement in their form, a top four finish seems out of reach for Arsenal, who come into this fixture 16 points off fourth, with a game in hand.

Southampton are firmly in the relegation zone. Three points behind fourth bottom Crystal Palace, with two games in hand.

Last weekend’s 3-0 defeat at West Ham means the Saints  have failed to win any of their last five in the Premier League.

Southampton have only won two of their 16 away matches in the league this season, conceding 25 times in that period.

Southampton held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s in December. Charlie Austin opened the scoring early on before then-Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud equalised for the Gunners in the 88th minute.
