Chelsea v Watford: Premier League preview
Premier League champions Chelsea host Watford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Blues head into the weekend nine points behind leaders Man City following last weekend’s shock 2-1 defeat at bottom side Crystal Palace.
In fact, Watford will begin the match two points and one place above Chelsea in fourth place.
Chelsea were in midweek Champions League action. They remain top of Group C despite being held to a dramatic 3-3 by Roma. David Luiz opened the scoring before Eden Hazard scored his first and second goals of the campaign.
The result means that Antonio Conte’s side are without a win in their last three.
Watford have won three and drawn two of their last six matches, including last weekend’s 2-1 win over Arsenal.
After going a goal behind, Troy Deeney equalised for Marco Silva’s side from the penalty spot, before Tom Cleverley netted the winner in second-half stoppage time.
If form is anything to go by, Chelsea may struggle against the Hornets. Only Spurs and Man City have managed more away points than Watford’s 10 this season, while Swansea and Crystal Palace are the only sides to have picked up fewer points at home than Chelsea.
Chelsea team news v Watford: Morata to start
Alvaro Morata returned to the starting eleven against Roma and is expected to keep his place in the side on Saturday.
Despite requiring a bandage on his head on Wednesday night, Gary Cahill’s head and chin injuries won’t keep him out against Watford.
Luiz and Tiemoue Bakayoko played despite carrying slight calf and groin injuries respectively and will need to be assessed.
Danny Drinkwater remains sidelined with a calf injury, while Moses is a major doubt with a thigh injury.
Chelsea will hope to have midfielder N’Golo Kante back from a thigh injury at the beginning of November.
Watford team news v Chelsea: Defender shortage
Defenders Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Prodl are carrying thigh injuries, although the latter has a chance of featuring.
Nathniel Chalobah won’t face his former club due to a knee injury that could keep him out for the rest of the year.
Tommie Hoban, Craig Catchcart and Isaac Success all have long-term knee injuries as well.
