What we need
Ex-Arsenal star Martin Keown has explained why Gareth Southgate should try and tempt Liverpool midfielder James Milner into coming out of retirement.
The Englishman retired from international duty in 2016 and has since thrived in both the Premier League and surprisingly the Champions League.
The player is actually the leading assister in the top European competition this campaign and shocked many.
Now, he’s probably considered to be England’s best central player and could really give the country something at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Though, Gareth Southgate would have to convince the player to return to the international fold.
Martin Keown has now explained in his Daily Mail Q&A column that Gareth Southgate should be looking to talk to Milner and tempt him back.
Whether he would be successful is yet to be seen.
“Trying to tempt James Milner out of international retirement should be a real consideration for Gareth Southgate,” he explained.
“Liverpool have reached the Champions League final with an all-English midfield of Milner, Jordan Henderson and, before his injury, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“Milner is a mature player who can play in an array of positions. If anything happens to Jordan Henderson or Eric Dier before the World Cup, who is going to sit in midfield?
“If England are to take him, they have to play him. It would be unfair to bring him out of retirement only to keep him as a squad player.”
