Mark Clattenburg will referee Madrid derby in Champions League final [Tweets]

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

The head honchos at UEFA probably didn’t watch the Battle of the Bridge before appointing Mark Clattenburg as referee of the Champions League final between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid later this month.

The official faced criticism from media and fans alike for his handling of the feisty encounter between Chelsea and Spurs which hit the headlines for a record nine yellow cards handed out to the visitors alone.

Former ref Graham Poll was one of the most vocal in criticism of Clattenburg, stating that Spurs’ title challenge might still be alive if it wasn’t for his weak handling of the match.

It’s not the best omen for a fixture which many would list among the most intense in football. The two Madrid giants met in the final two years ago, a clash which saw 12 players booked and Diego Simeone sent off.

There were plenty of people toasting Clattenburg as a worthy ref and as many calling him overrated.
