Mario Balotelli got a bizarre red card for Nice away at Lorient

Mario Balotelli sent off

Former Man City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli was sent off on Saturday night in France.

The incident happened in the second half of Nice’s away trip to Lorient.

Nice are currently in the race for the Ligue 1 title with leaders Monaco and PSG, while Lorient are at the foot of the French top flight, and they look shoo-ins for the drop.

Wylan Cyprien fired the visitors into a 15th minute lead, but Nice were reduced to 10 men with a little over 20 minutes left in the game when Balotelli was shown a straight red.

So what happened?

Knowing why Balotelli was dismissed wasn’t so straightforward.

The Italian striker got involved in a physical battle with Zargo Toure, but it didn’t seem that Balotelli threw an elbow in the tussle.

Nevertheless, the striker was soon shown a red card: was it for talking back to the referee?
