Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot outlines aspirations for new season

Diogo Dalot’s AC Milan stint

Diogo Dalot spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan in Serie A with AC Milan.

The Portuguese departed Old Trafford after struggling for any sort of regular first-team action.

In Milan, Dalot would become a fairly integral part of their side, featuring 34 times across all competitions.

In said outings he would score two goals and provide three assists, helping the Rossoneri to a 2nd place finish in the Italian top-flight, of course securing them Champions League football for the forthcoming campaign.

Dalot on his aspirations for 2021/22

Dalot, though, has since returned to Manchester United after playing for Portugal at Euro 2020.

Dalot has not started in any pre-season games, but he did come off the bench in the Red Devils’ recent 2-2 draw with Brentford.

But, his future in Manchester does seem to be up in the air somewhat. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is clearly United’s main right-back and they have also been linked with Kieran Trippier this summer.

This would seemingly make Dalot United’s 3rd choice right-back if he were to stay this season.

And now, Dalot has been discussing his 2020/21 and his goals for this campaign.

When speaking on 2020/21, the Portuguese stated:

‘The goal for last season was to get minutes again, get my legs going. Be fit. And I had it.

‘I think I was one of the only players in the [AC Milan] squad that was available for all the games during the season and for me that was a very good point as well besides of course the minutes and games I played, which were a lot.

‘Like I said, it was perfect. I met very good people in the club, very good people in the city and it was fantastic. The chance to play in another fantastic league brought me some very good stuff, not just for football but for my life as well.’

But when pressed on his aspirations for the new season, Dalot stated that he wants to keep developing and keep playing:

‘Keep developing. When I had a season like last season obviously the things start to get more demanding as well.

‘I want to keep playing, I want to keep giving everything I have and improve. I know last season was fantastic but I can do even more.’

So, if it is regular game time he wants, perhaps Dalot may need to seek a move elsewhere as, even if Trippier does not sign, it is hard to see Dalot getting that many minutes ahead of Wan-Bissaka.
