Cristiano Ronaldo has recently shown his support for a social media post hitting out at Lionel Messi’s 2021 Ballon d’Or win.
Messi makes it 7
The award ceremony for the 2021 Ballon d’Or took place on Monday evening.
The coveted prize did not have a winner in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, but was back this year and saw a familiar face pick up the award.
Following Italy’s Euro 202 triumph and Chelsea’s Champions League win, there was some talk of Jorginho potentially being in the running to claim the prize.
However, we would once again see Lionel Messi named as the Ballon d’Or winner this year.
The Argentine picked up a record-breaking 7th Ballon d’Or, a feat which seems unlikely to be matched for many, many years.
HERE IS THE WINNER!

Cristiano Ronaldo backs post hitting out at Ballon d’Or
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been Messi’s most fierce rival for the award over the years, actually only finished 6th in the rankings this year.
Given that CR7 only just scrapped Champions League football with Juventus and Portugal did not do that well at Euro 2020, it is easy to see why Ronaldo slipped down the pecking order this year.
However, Ronaldo would perhaps not agree because, as shown above, the Manchester United man has recently shown his support for a post hitting out at this year’s Ballon d’Or.
As per the Daily Mail:
Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly backed claims from a fan account that Lionel Messi stole the Ballon d’Or from himself and Robert Lewandowski.
The post in question stated:
“Theft. Dirt. Shame. Simply regrettable.
“Who saw, saw. Anyone who is smart enough knows who the real deserving ones are. Receiving awards without earning it is false happiness, without pride.
“43 goals in the year, 6 goals in 5 games in this Champions League, all decisive and a guy who, regardless of age, continues to work miracles and is the guy who most impresses the world most often.
“They still put the guy in 6th… Do you really think that 5 guys did more than him in the year? Never.
“He could fight for this award calmly and the fight would be good with Lewandowski who in individual numbers was incredible and Bayern had a better season than Juventus and has been having a calmer season than United, but at the national selection level for example, Cristiano was much better.”
Ronaldo would then, as per the DM, respond to this post by commenting ‘Facts’ followed by ‘thumbs up’ and ‘eyes’ emojis:
