Mata’s contract situation
Juan Mata is one of several Manchester United players whose contract is due to expire in July of 2019.
Luke Shaw was one of the said players but United have already agreed on a new long-term deal with Shaw.
United are also said to be in talks with the in-form Anthony Martial over a new contract.
However, according to the Daily Mail, United have still yet to open contract talks with Juan Mata.
Mata has less than eight months remaining on his current deal, which is said to be worth around £140,000 per week.
As a result, Mata will be allowed to speak to foreign clubs come January.
Juan Mata’s time at Manchester United
Mata arrived at Manchester United in January of 2014 for a fee of around £37.1 million from Chelsea.
The Spaniard has played an impressive 198 games for Man United in all competitions, in which he has scored 42 and assisted 34.
The 2018/19 season, however, has seen Mata starting fewer games for the Reds.
Mata has made 12 aappearancesthis season for United but five of those have come as a sub.
Despite this, Mata has still been a key member of United’s squad.
Mata would come off the bench and score as Man United came from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle 3-2.
Most recently, Mata would come off the bench to spark Manchester United’s comeback for Juventus in the Champions League.
Mata has since commented on the freekick he scored to draw United level vs the Serie A giants:
“As soon as there was the free-kick in there, I had the confidence that I had to take it.
“I told Ash ‘please let me take it, because I can go over the wall’. It’s very difficult for the goalkeeper because they don’t see a lot.
“I think because of the venue and the importance of the game, it’s one of the best (I’ve scored).”
