Man United vs Watford prediction: Man United 2-1 Watford

Are Manchester United finally starting to find some form?

It’s been a positive week so far for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side but all of that work would be undone if they fail to win this one.

Watford meanwhile are still very much in trouble and need points to climb out of the relegation zone.

It’s been a very positive week for Manchester United since returning from their mid-season break.

On Monday night, they travelled to Stamford Bridge in a pivotal clash in the race for the Champions League places.

It was a tight first half but, on the stroke of half time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross found Anthony Martial who’s magnificent header nestled in the bottom corner.

Then, mid-way through the second half, Bruno Fernandes’ corner found Harry Maguire who towered over everybody to power his side 2-0 in front.

That was the first time they’ve scored two headed goals in a Premier League game since November 2017.

The Blues had two goals chalked off in the second period by VAR but Man United do not care as they come away with a 2-0 win.

That was their first league double over Chelsea since 1987/88 and it’s the first time they’ve done so without conceding since 1964/65.

In the table, they moved up to seventh, one point behind Sheffield United and just two of Tottenham in fifth.

That fifth place could be crucial if Manchester City’s UEFA ban is upheld.

Then, their busy week continued in Belgium on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

They faced Club Brugge but any assumptions this would be a walkover were destroyed after just a quarter of an hour.

Simon Mignolet’s long punt forward found Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis who lobbed the ball over Sergio Romero who was 22 yards off his line.

However, the home fans were not celebrating for long.

Just 20 minutes later, Anthony Martial pick pocketed the defender and finished cooly to level up the tie.

Both sides had chances in the second half but 1-1 it finished at Jan Breydel Stadium.

That gives them a great chance of getting through next Thursday.

First though, will they beat Watford?

Can Watford get a much needed win?

As for Watford, this is their first game for 15 days after their own mid-season break.

Last time out, they travelled to Brighton & Hove Albion in a pivotal relegation six pointer.

It was their fans celebrating after just 18 minutes when Abdoulaye Doucouré’s drove through and fired in a magnificent strike.

However, they could not hold on as, with about ten minutes to play, Adrian Mariappa turned the ball into his own net.

Since the start of last season, Watford have conceded six own goals in the Premier League, more than any other side.

Neither side could then find a winner so 1-1 it finished in Sussex.

That means the Hornets have now dropped 17 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, including eight in their last three games.

Only West Ham (19) have dropped more in the competition this term.

They’ve now taken just two points from their last four games having amassed 14 from six prior to that.

In the table, Watford are second bottom but still only one point from safety.

Can they climb out of the relegation zone here?

They did win the reverse fixture 2-0 in late December.

So, Nigel Pearson can become the fourth English manager to complete a Premier League double over Manchester United.

Will it be a famous away win for Watford?

Despite this being their third game in six days, Ole Gunnar Solskjær has limited options for rotation.

Sergio Romero continued as the cup keeper in Belgium on Thursday.

But, David de Gea will return here looking to record a third successive Premier League clean sheet for the first time in almost exactly a year.

In defence, they’ve lined-up with a back five for the last two games but makeshift centre-back Luke Shaw is likely to drop out here.

Victor Lindelöf will partner Harry Maguire with Eric Bailly on the bench.

At full-back, Brandon Williams will keep his place with Aaron Wan-Bissaka displacing Diogo Dalot on the other side.

In midfield, Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard will drop out from Thursday night.

Fred will come in alongside Nemanja Matić with Bruno Fernandes in the more advanced role.

Dan James is also expected to return out wide with Juan Mata on the other side.

Leading the line will be Anthony Martial who became the third Manchester United player to score home and away in the Premier League against Chelsea in the same season.

Mason Greenwood missed the midweek trip to Brugge but could be on the bench alongside Odion Ighalo

The Nigerian could become the first player to score on his Premier League home debut, having previously represented the visiting team in the competition, since 2014.

Man United have won all six of their Premier League matches against Watford at Old Trafford, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two.

Will this one follow a similar pattern?

As for Nigel Pearson’s side, could the fact they’ll be much fresher than Manchester United be a deciding factor?

Goalkeeper Ben Foster has had a mixed season so far.

Only four Premier League goalkeepers have kept more clean sheets than his eight but only one has let in more goals than his 40.

In defence, despite his own goal at the Amex, Adrian Mariappa is likely to continue at right-back in an unchanged back line.

Christian Kabasele, Craig Cathcart and Adam Masina will also keep their places.

Craig Dawson, Kiko Femenía and José Cholevas are the other options; Daryl Janmaat is injured.

In midfield, Étienne Capoue and Abdoulaye Doucouré have both played over 1,870 minutes this season.

The latter has scored three goals in his last six Premier League games for Watford, as many as in his previous 34 appearances in the competition.

At the moment, it is Will Hughes who is getting the nod to make up the midfield three over Nathaniel Chalobah.

Out wide, Gerard Deulofeu will keep his place but, on the other side, Ismaïla Sarr will return from a hamstring injury to displace Roberto Pereyra.

Up front, Troy Deeney will be looking to add to his five goals in 15 appearances this season, one of which came in the reverse fixture.

They could also have a lot of attacking options on the bench, namely Danny Welbeck, Andre Gray and January arrivals Ignacio Pussetto and João Pedro.

Will this Watford XI get a vital win?
