Manchester United vs Southampton: Score prediction & betting tips

The reverse fixture at St Mary’s way back in August produced a 1-1 draw.

However, unsurprisingly, Manchester United have won five of their previous ten meetings with the Saints victorious in just one of those.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have both scored 20 goals this season so are Manchester United’s joint-top scorers.

101 Great Goals predicts: Manchester United 3-1 Southampton

Manchester United are the Premier League’s in form team of June and July and nobody thought they’d be saying that six months ago.

On Thursday night, the Red Devils ran riot again, easily winning 3-0 at Villa Park.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring after half an hour, winning and then converting a penalty.

That’s the 13th Premier League penalty they’ve been given this season, a joint single-season record.

Then, in first half stoppage time, that man again Mason Greenwood made it 2-0 with a fierce drive from the edge of the box.

Just nine minutes after the interval, it was 3-0; Fernandes picked out Paul Pogba from a corner and the Frenchman curled home his first goal of the season.

That 3-0 victory means Manchester United have now beaten Aston Villa in the Premier League on all seven day of the week, the first time one team has done that to another.

Also, in the context of this season, they’re the first English top-flight team to win four consecutive games by 3+ goals since Liverpool in October 1987.

That’s because they’d previously defeated Sheffield United and Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 and Bournemouth 5-2.

Overall, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side have taken 24 points from the last 30 available but there’s still plenty to play for.

By the time this game kicks off, CAS are due to have released their verdict on Manchester City’s UEFA ban.

If upheld, fifth place will be enough for Champions League qualification which is where they are at the moment, six points clear of Wolves.

If not, they’ll have to overtake either Chelsea or Leicester who are one and two points ahead respectively.

Will Manchester United’s superb form continue?

Can Southampton stun Old Trafford?

Southampton though could prove to be tough opposition.

They too were last in action on Thursday as they travelled to Goodison Park to face Everton.

Like their hosts, they were given the opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot but James Ward-Prowse clipped the cross-bar.

However, shortly after, Stuart Armstrong’s scuffed effort fell for Danny Ings who rounded the goalkeeper and scored.

Southampton deservedly in front but they weren’t for long; Everton equalised on the stroke of half time.

Neither team could find a winner in the second half but still, a good point for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

Before that, Southampton had won three of their last four, beating Norwich, Watford and Manchester City.

The only team to beat them since the resumption is Arsenal.

Southampton are currently 13th in the table but Manchester United beware.

Only Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have racked up more points away from home this season that Southampton’s 27.

The Saints have only twice at Old Trafford since 1988 but those were back to back games in 2015 and 2016.

Will they win at the Theatre of dreams?

Manchester United team news vs Southampton

On Thursday, Manchester United named an unchanged starting XI for four consecutive Premier League games for the first time in nearly 14 years.

Despite the fact they travel to Crystal Palace on Thursday and then face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjær is unlikely to tinker here.

So, David de Gea will continue in goal.

He has now made more Manchester United appearances than Peter Schmeichel and is second on the list of goalkeepers behind only Alex Stepney who played for the club between 1966 and 1978.

In front of him, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelöf, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw is a very settled back four.

Eric Bailly and Brandon Williams are the alternatives; Phil Jones has not been in a matchday squad since lockdown.

In midfield, Nemanja Matić’s resurgence has earned him a new contract and will see him keep his place at Fred and Scott McTominay’s expense.

The Serbian’s job is to allow Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to go forward and create.

The latter has registered six assists in his first ten Premier League appearances.

This is a joint-record alongside Arjen Robben, Mesut Özil, David Gionla, former Manchester United players Lee Sharpe and Ángel Di María and former Saint Dušan Tadić.

Ahead of them, Mason Greenwood is also breaking records.

His goal at Villa Park means he is the youngest Manchester United player to score in three successive league appearance since Alex Dawson who did so in 1958.

Greenwood will make up a frightening attacking trio alongside Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata, Odion Ighalo and Dan James, who scored in the reverse fixture 11 months ago, will be on the bench.

Southampton team news vs Manchester United

As for Southampton, the name of the game for them too is unchanged line-ups.

Ralph Hasenhüttl picked the same XI for both the games against Man City and Everton and is likely to stick with this side.

Alex McCarthy has been number one ever since Angus Gunn was dropped following the 9-0 defeat to Leicester City.

In defence, Tottenham loanee Kyle Walker-Peters has established himself as first-choice right-back ahead of Yan Valery.

Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek and Ryan Bertrand will make up the defence.

In midfield, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has not had the best few weeks.

The Dane was first striped of the captaincy and then lost his place in the XI to Oriol Romeu.

The latter will continue alongside new captain James Ward-Prowse at the base of the 4-2-2-2 with Nathan Redmond and Stuart Armstrong further forward.

Moussa Djenepo and Sofiane Boufal are injured.

In attack, Ché Adams’ superb first goal for the club last weekend means he’ll keep his place.

Danny Ings will start alongside; he’s opened the scoring in nine Premier League games this season, more than any other player.

Overall, he’s got 22 goals this season including 19 in the Premier League.

Will he add to that at Old Trafford?
