Manchester United vs Aston Villa prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Aston Villa

Manchester United’s mixed season continues.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side still have not won back to back Premier League games and once again failed to do that last weekend.

That leaves them still languishing in mid-table so can they begin December with a victory?

Aston Villa though will head to Old Trafford full of confidence after an assured win last time out.

Can the visitors get a result at the Theatre of Dreams?

Manchester United just can’t quite get going in the Premier League this season.

Last weekend, they were involved in one of the most thrilling games of the season so far.

The Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down against Sheffield United and playing abysmally.

Then, amazingly, in the space of seven minutes, the game completely turned on it’s head.

Brandon Williams got them back into it with his first goal for the club in the 72nd minute.

Then, substitute Mason Greenwood and then Marcus Rashford scored to see them in front with very quick-fire goals.

However, they could not hold on as the Blades scored a stoppage time equaliser.

3-3 it finished at Bramall Lane.

That means they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 12 top-flight away games, their worst streak since 1985/86.

In the context of this season, they have just 17 points from 13 games and are nine points outside the top four.

They host Tottenham on Wednesday so will be desperate to go into that one following a win.

On Thursday, they travelled to Kazakhstan to take on Astana in the UEFA Europa League group stages.

Jesse Lingard fired a very youthful side in front after just ten minutes in Nur-Sultan.

However, two second half goals including an own goal from Di’Shon Bernard saw Astana to a 2-1 win.

It matters little though as they are already through to the round of 32.

Back in the Premier League, their current mid-table position is not good enough so will they get just their fifth win in 19 league matches?

Villa to spring a surprise?

As for Aston Villa, they arrested their slide down the table on Monday night.

Last time out, they hosted Newcastle United hopeful of getting back to winning ways.

Just after the half hour mark, Conor Hourihane’s pin-point free-kick flew into the top corner to open the scoring.

Just four minutes later, the Irishman turned provider, finding Anwar El Ghazi who poked home from close range.

2-0 it finished at Villa Park; that’s their fourth league win of the season, more than they managed in the entire 2015/16 season.

Prior to that, Dean Smith’s side had lost three in a row although those were against Manchester City, Liverpool and Wolves.

Monday’s win has lifted them up to 15th, four points above the relegation zone.

After this, the Villans face Chelsea, Leicester and then Sheffield United.

This begins a very tough period but, anything they get here will be seen as a bonus.

That’s because they have a miserable historic record.

After winning two of their first seven Premier League meetings with Man United, Aston Villa have won just one of their last 41 against them in the top-flight, losing 30.

At Old Trafford, they have won just one of their 24 Premier League matches; a 1-0 victory in December 2009.

Will it be an historic occasion for the travelling fans?

The team Ole Gunnar Solskjær picked on Thursday was the youngest Manchester United have ever fielded in European competition with an average age of 22 years and 26 days.

In fact, seven of the XI were born more recently than that famous Champions League Final against Bayern Munich.

But, this side will have a much more familiar look to it.

David de Gea will be in goal looking to add to his mere two clean sheets this season.

In defence, they lined-up with a back three at Bramall Lane but that was abandoned after just 45 minutes.

So, Phil Jones will drop out with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf rekindling their partnership.

Luke Shaw made his first start for over three months in mid-week but 19 year old Brandon Williams will keep his place ahead of both he and Ashley Young.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be on the other side.

In midfield, it’ll be the Brazilian duo of Andreas Pereira and Fred once again the Premier League.

Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are both still injured. McTominay is a possibility here, but in his pre match presser Solskjaer seemed much more positive about the Scot playing against Spurs.

Further forward, in Nur-Sultan, Jesse Lingard captained the side for the very first time.

It was his 29th appearance of 2019 for Manchester United but he scored just his second goal of the calendar year, 307 days after his last.

This could see him retain his place in the XI, playing in the number ten role.

The rest of the front three will be unchanged from Sheffield United.

With seven goals and four assists, Marcus Rashford has been directly involved in 58% of their 19 Premier League goals this season; only one player has been involved in a higher proportion of their club’s goals.

He, Anthony Martial and Dan James will be tasked with getting the goals that defeat Aston Villa.

Will Man United get a rare league win?

As for Aston Villa, they’re likely to make one change from the side that beat Newcastle on Monday.

Tom Heaton will continue in goal; he racked up three clean sheets this season which is more than his opposite number.

In defence, Björn Engels is back from injury.

So, the Belgian will displace Ezri Konsa in the XI and rejoin Tyrone Mings at centre-back.

Frédéric Guilbert and Matt Targett will continue as the first-choice full-backs.

In midfield, Conor Hourihane came into the side on Monday and provided a goal and an assist.

Since the start of last season, the Ireland international has been involved in more Aston Villa league goals than anybody else; nine goals and 13 assists.

Thus, he will keep his place ahead of Marvelous Nakamba and alongside Douglas Luiz and John McGinn.

Further forward, Jack Grealish will continue on the left.

Anwar El Ghazi’s goal last week will see him keep his place over Trézéguet on the other side.

Jota is out with a groin injury.

Up front, as always, will be Wesley.

Can this side lead Aston Villa to their first victory at Old Trafford for ten years?
