Manchester United vs Astana betting tips: Europa League match preview & predictions

Manchester United vs Astana prediction: Manchester United 4-0 Astana

Manchester United struggled at home in Europe last season, but having made the step down to the Europa League, they’ll be expected to breeze through the group stage.

United’s fringe players are set to be given a run out and they’ll be keen to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Astana have only won two of their last six away matches in all competitions. The visitors have a 4,800km trip to make to Old Trafford, which is unlikely to help their current away form.

Manchester United vs Astana: Who will win?

Unsurprisingly, Man United are huge favourites at 2/11 while an Astana win is priced at 12/1. The draw can be backed at 13/2.

The Red Devils have already kept two clean sheets at Old Trafford this season. Another United shutout on Thursday is 4/6.

If United fans get their wish, Mason Greenwood will be handed a rare start. The 17-year-old has impressed at youth level but is yet to score his first senior goal. Greenwood is 9/2 to open the scoring and 6/5 to score anytime.

Manchester United vs Astana Europa League match preview

Manchester United host Kazakh side FC Astana at Old Trafford in their Europa League Group L opener on Thursday night. Partizan and AZ Alkmaar are the other two sides occupying Group L.

Unsurprisingly, the two sides have never met before. Thursday’s match will be Astana’s first in England.

Solskjaer’s charges qualified for the Europa League group stage after finishing sixth in the Premier League. The Red Devils made it to the last eight of the Champions League last season and won the Europa League the last time they featured in it, in 2017.

Astana’s Europa League qualifying campaign began in early July!

The Kazakh champions have had to eliminate Cluf, Santa Coloma, Valletta and BATE Borisov to get to the group stage. Astana lost 2-0 in the second leg of their playoff tie against BATE but went through courtesy of their 3-0 win the first leg at home.

While most European teams have only just begun their seasons, Astana are more than halfway through their domestic campaign. Last year’s Kazakhstan Premier League champions are currently third in the table, but they have played two games fewer than those above them due to their Europa League qualifying campaign.

Astana came from behind on Sunday to beat Shakhtar Karagandy 2-1 at home. Croatian midfielder Marin Tomasov got his name on the scoresheet.

United moved up to fourth in the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Leicester on Saturday. Marcus Rashford scored from the penalty spot early on.

Manchester United team news vs Astana

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to make wholesale changes to his usual Premier League side.

Paul Pogba has returned to training after missing the last set of international matches as well as Saturday’s win over Leicester. The World Cup winner is unlikely to be rushed back for Thursday’s clash.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka recovered from a back injury to face the Foxes but will likely be given a rest on Thursday, with Diogo Dalot potentially starting at right-back after recovering from his own injury.

Fred and Matic could start together in central midfield.

David De Gea ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a contract extension on Monday but could be given the night off.

Highly-rated youngsters Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong and Axel Tuanzebe will all be hoping for some valuable minutes.

Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial remain doubtful while Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are long-term absentees.

Astana team news vs Manchester United

Manager Roman Hryhorchuk was consistent with his team selection during the qualifying rounds, so minimal changes are expected on Thursday.
