Manchester United vs Arsenal Premier League match preview

One of the Premier League’s biggest rivalries continues on Wednesday night as Manchester United host Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Arsenal leapfrogged Spurs into the top four on Sunday following their 4-2 win in the North London derby. The Gunners came from 2-1 down to win 4-2 with goals from Aubameyang (2), Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira.

Remarkably, Arsenal are still yet to be leading at half-time in any of their matches this season. Torreira was named man of the match for the third time in four matches.

United’s poor run of form continued at the weekend as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Southampton, extending their winless streak in the league to three matches.

It could have been worse for Jose Mourinho’s side as they found themselves 2-0 down in the opening 20 minutes. Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera rescued a point for the visitors. The result leaves United in 7th place, eight points behind Arsenal.

Old rivalry

Manchester United did the double over Arsenal last season, winning last season’s corresponding fixture 2-1. Marouane Fellaini scored a stoppage-time winner after Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had scored for either side.

Earlier in the season United had beaten the Gunners 3-1 at the Emirates. United finished the game with 10 men after Pogba was sent off.

United and Arsenal have faced each other 52 times in Premier League history. The Red Devils have nearly twice as many victories as Arsenal, winning 24 times to the Gunners’ 13.

The last time United hosted Arsenal in a midweek Premier League fixture, back in May 2002, the Gunners clinched the Premier League title courtesy of Sylvain Wiltord’s famous strike.

Defenders Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly could come back into contention following ankle and back injuries respectively. Victor Lindelof will miss out once again.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are expected to return to the starting eleven after starting on the bench last time out.

Ander Herrera faces competition from Fred for a spot in central midfield.

Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia face late fitness tests.

Former United winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi are expected to make way for Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey.

Mesut Ozil remains a doubt with a back injury while club captain Laurent Koscielny could feature on the bench.
