A frustrating summer for Mourinho
Jose Mourinho was left frustrated after Manchester United failed to sign a central defender during the 2018 summer transfer window.
Man United were linked with a host of centre-backs including Yerry Mina, who chose to join Everton over United.
United also had an interest in Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, however, he would remain a Spurs player.
Given Mourinho clearly wanted to bring in a centre-back this summer, you would expect United to be looking at some defensive targets for the January window.
However, according to The Independent, Manchester United are unlikely to sign any players in the winter window.
It is no secret that Mourinho and Man United’s vice-chairman Ed Woodward do not have the best relationship.
The report from the Independent has further emphasised this, citing a lack of communication between the pair on United’s transfer activities.
Manchester United’s poor defence
Regardless of Mourinho and Woodward’s relationship, it is clear that United are in desperate need of some reinforcements at the back.
The Red Devils had one of the best defences in the Premier League last season.
Now, however, United’s back line has been very poor.
Man United are currently 8th in the league, which is not ideal.
What is even less ideal though is their defensive record.
In 12 league games this season Manchester United have let in a staggering 21 goals.
This gives United a goal difference of -1 and the worst defensive record of the top 14 Premier League sides.
The only teams to have conceded more than Mourinho’s side this season are Cardiff, Huddersfield, Fulham and Burnley.
Man United could sell Bailly and Rojo
While The Independent are reporting that United are unlikely to sign anyone in January, the Telegraph is suggesting Mourinho would be open to selling Eric Bailly and Marcus Rojo if it meant he could sign a new defender in January.
