Man United & Ajax’s Edwin van der Sar
The Sunday Times have recycled a possible transfer rumour for Man United fans.
It’s reported in the broadsheet that Man United are considering a move for Ajax’s Edwin van der Sar.
Van der Sar moved to Old Trafford back in 2005.
The Dutch keeper was the first player to join Man United after the Glazers bought the club. As a 34-year-old, Van der Sar joined United from Fulham for just £1.5m.
Now 48, could van der Sar sign for Man United again in 2019?
Edwin van der Sar’s current job
These days Edwin van der Sar is back at Ajax.
He has the role of being Ajax’s general director.
However the Sunday Times report that van der Sar is on Man United’s possible shopping list:
Appointing both a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho and a new director of football are still scheduled for the end of the season.
Paul Mitchell of RB Leipzig, an early frontrunner (to become the director football), is no longer being considered but Edwin van der Sar, the Ajax executive, and De Gea’s predecessor in goal is among those whose credentials are enticing.
Would Edwin van der Sar take the Man United job?
This isn’t the first time Edwin van der Sar has been named as a possible candidate for Man United’s director of football role.
Around five months ago the story was doing the rounds. And at that time, van der Sar made sure to distance himself from those stories.
Speaking to Sky Sports last year, the former Dutch keeper said:
I saw it (the report) a few weeks ago in the press, but that story about United is nonsense.
I think I have a two-year contract. Ajax is my club and I would like to stay longer. The success we strive for and want to achieve is beautiful.
Has anything changed?
