Manchester United prepared to give Mourinho £100million in January

Although his future at Old Trafford has been under some scrutiny, it appears Manchester United could be ready to back Jose Mourinho in January.

It is being reported in The Guardian that the United board are willing to hand the 55-year-old £100million to spend on new additions come January.

Defensive reinforcements

Over the summer, Mourinho made it no secret that he was in the market for a new central defender.

Despite being heavily linked with both Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld a move for either failed to materialize.

Any kind of defensive addition was not backed by the board which led to tension between Mourinho and Ed Woodward.

Recording just one clean sheet this season, no team in the top half of the table hold a worse defensive record than United.

Former England boss Fabio Capello announced earlier in the month the Portuguese boss had his eyes on two Italian based stars.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, the 72-year-old revealed United had their sights on both Milan Skriniar and Kalidou Koulibaly.

“I met Mourinho during a meeting between managers last summer,”

“He wanted to sign two defenders, one was [Inter’s] Milan Skriniar, the other one was [Napoli’s] Koulibaly.”

An attacking addition

Mourinho could be looking to bring in some competition for the misfiring Romelu Lukaku.

Having to settle for a place among the substitutes for Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton, Lukaku has now failed to score in his last eight appearances.

The Belgian international has also not found the net at Old Trafford since March.

Speaking after Sunday’s victory, Mourinho explained his decision to drop the 25-year-old.

“The reason is, he is playing lots of matches and lately, not just not scoring goals, but also not showing lots of confidence.

“Sometimes we decide that the best thing for the players is to not be on the pitch, to be protected and away from the initial pressure.

“If he comes into the game later, he will come with a positive feeling of trying to make a difference and be back to normality because normally with Romelu, he scores lots of goals.

“So I think he is under pressure a little bit because he is not doing that.”

Mourinho could also be looking for a new attacking option due to Alexis Sanchez’s woeful time in Manchester.

Struggling to adjust since his move from Arsenal, the winger was dropped entirely for United’s 3-1 loss against West Ham.

The 29-year-old has scored one Premier League goal since March 31st.
