Manchester United have been linked with Ajax defender Jurrien Timber all summer, with the defender having enjoyed a stellar season in Amsterdam under new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

However, any deal is currently up in the air, with the Dutch defender reportedly torn between making the move to Old Trafford and renewing his deal with Ajax, over fears that he could lose his World Cup spot should he change clubs this summer.

As a result, the new Old Trafford boss may be forced to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements, as they seek players that can help transform the side into contenders once more, following a disappointing Europa League finish in their most recent campaign.

And, they may have found just the man.

Goncalo Ignacio a surprise option

Now, as per English outlet the Daily Express, Portuguese defender Goncalo Inacio has emerged as a defensive alternative to Timber should a deal fail to be struck.

The report claims that 'Manchester United have prepared an offer of £34.1million (€40m) for Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio', with a further £4.3m in bonuses, taking a total fee to close to £40m.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were thought to be closing in on a deal for the 20-year-old, who appeared 28 times in the Portuguese top-flight last campaign. However, Manchester United's interest could well throw a potential spanner in the works of any deal from the Molineux club.

It would be the first of several Manchester United signings, with a striker, two midfielders and another fullback also on Ten Hag's wishlist this summer.
