A big blow for Manchester City and Laporte
Manchester City have suffered an injury blow against Real Madrid in the Champions League, with star defender Aymeric Laporte being forced off.
The Frenchman has been brilliant since joining City from Athletic Bilbao.
Laporte has racked up 71 appearances for the Sky Blues, and is comfortably their best central defender.
However, it’s been a very difficult season for the stopper.
Laporte has missed the majority of this season so far, missing all cup and European games, as well as the vast majority of league games.
He did return from injury after four-and-a-half months to face Sheffield United at the end of January, but failed to finish the game.
Laporte then played some part in the games against West Ham and Leicester.
Now, the Frenchman has suffered another injury blow in City’s clash with Real Madrid.
Is Laporte set for more time on the sidelines?
Pep Guardiola’s Man City travelled to the Bernabeu in hope of securing an important result in the first-leg.
An impressive first-half saw them limit Los Blancos, but also create a solid amount of chances of their own.
They would then go on to win the game after a brilliant second-half comeback.
However, there was one big blow in the first period, with Aymeric Laporte being forced off with a mystery injury.
The Frenchman looked as though he was struggling during the time he was on the pitch, before going down off the ball.
A stretcher was brought on, but Laporte would eventually stand up and walk off the pitch.
Fernandinho would replace Laporte in the centre of defence, but this will come as another defensive blow.
City have been forced to play both Fernandinho and Rodri in the heart of defence this season due to injuries to John Stones and Laporte.
