Manchester City vs Watford betting tips: FA Cup Final preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Watford prediction: Manchester City 3-0 Watford

The 138th FA Cup Final is here!

This is only Watford’s second appearance in this showpiece event and their first since 1984.

Back then Graham Taylor’s side were beaten 2-0 by Everton so can Javi Gracia’s team go one better?

As for Manchester City, they are the ninth different club to reach both domestic English cup finals in the same season.

This is their tenth FA Cup Final appearance however, their last saw that shock 1-0 defat to Wigan Athletic in 2013.

Will Pep Guardiola add to his array of titles or will Watford cause an upset?

Manchester City vs Watford: Match preview

What an historic occasion for Watford!

Back on April 7, they found themselves 2-0 down against Wolves in their FA Cup semi-final with just 11 minutes remaining.

Gerard Deulofeu scored a sumptuous lob to give them hope before they were awarded a penalty in the very last minute of added on time.

Troy Deeney smashed in from the spot to take the match into extra time.

14 minutes into the additional period, Deulofeu struck again to send Watford through.

Javi Gracia’s side scored with each of their first three shots on target in that semi-final to make the final for the first time in 35 years.

Will there be a new name on the old trophy?

Since that momentous day, Watford’s league form has been poor.

They’ve won just once and that was away to Huddersfield almost a month ago.

Last weekend, they were beaten 4-1 by West Ham on the final day as they ended their Premier League campaign with three successive defeats.

However, that’s all in the past now so can the Hornets cause a massive FA Cup giant killing?

Phil Foden

Manchester City’s domestic dominance to continue?

As for Manchester City, they’re looking to complete a domestic quadruple. No team has ever done that before!

They’ve already won the FA Community Shield and the Carabao Cup, beating Chelsea on both occasions.

Last weekend, they secured the Premier League title.

Goals from Sergio Agüero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and İlkay Gündoğan saw them win 4-1 at Brighton.

That was their 14th straight win, only Man City themselves from last season can boast a longer winning run, and it saw them finish on 98 points, one above Liverpool.

The 86 seconds they were behind at the Amex was actually the first time they’d conceded first in a Premier League match since December 8.

In fact, they’ve been behind for a total of just 126 minutes in the Premier League all season.

In this competition, they’ve scored 20 goals in just five matches but only narrowly beat Brighton & Hove Albion in the semi-final 1-0.

This is the only major trophy English football has to offer that Pep Guardiola has never got his hands on so will they complete their domestic dominance?

Javi Gracia has some big decisions to make ahead of this one although the majority of his side picks itself.

Prior to this season, zero Brazilian goalkeepers had ever played in an FA Cup Final.

This year there will be two.

That’s because Heurelho Gomes, who’s played in every round of the cup this year, will get the nod over Ben Foster.

This will be his last ever match as a professional before he retires.

Ahead of him, Craig Cathcart and Christian Kabasele are the first choice centre-back pairing.

Kiko Femenía, who played in the 2017 Copa del Rey Final for Alavés, will keep his place ahead of Daryl Janmaat at right-back.

On the other side, José Cholevas’ red card he picked up last weekend has since been rescinded so he is free to play.

The Greek international has put in 209 crosses in the Premier League this season, the fourth most, so will be a threat.

In midfield, Étienne Capoue will be fit after a groin strain, to partner Abdoulaye Doucouré.

As usual, Will Hughes and Roberto Pereyra will be the wide players.

Up front could be where Gracia faces a dilemma.

Captain Troy Deeney will start.

He has been directly involved in 10 goals in his last 14 FA Cup matches (six goals, four assists).

But who will be alongside him?

In the semi-final, Gracia went for the more robust and hard working Andre Gray.

However, as Gerard Deulofeu scored twice off the bench, surely it will be he who starts.

Deulofeu has 12 goals and 5 assists to his name this season.

Can this side cause an FA Cup upset?

Manchester City team news vs Watford

As for Manchester City, Guardiola made a subtle tactical tweak last weekend.

He moved Raheem Sterling into a number 10 position in a 4-4-1-1 for the first time this season.

However, he’s expected to revert to the more conventional 4-1-4-1 here.

The other Brazilian goalkeeper will be Ederson; he’s conceded just 38 goals in 54 appearances this season.

In defence, Vincent Kompany has started the last four matches and is expected to keep his place.

Alongside him, Aymeric Laporte’s five goals this season have all come away from the Etihad Stadium, an average of 507 miles from Manchester.

Will he add another one here?

At left-back Benjamin Mendy is still out with a knee injury so Oleksandr Zinchenko will keep his place.

Manchester City have won all 22 league games in which Zinchenko has featured, the longest winning run in Premier League history.

In midfield, Fernandinho is still missing with a knee problem.

İlkay Gündoğan will continue in the holding role; the German has the most assists in the FA Cup this season with four.

Ahead of him, Kevin De Bruyne has not started since April 20 but did come on for 12 minutes last weekend.

It seems possible he could come into the side for this one.

If he does, Riyad Mahrez would be the man to make way, joining Leroy Sané on the bench.

Up front, despite scoring the only goal of the semi-final, Gabriel Jesus will also be a substitute.

That’s because Sergio Agüero can not be left out.

He is only the second player in Premier League history to score 20 or more goals in five consecutive campaigns, the other being Thierry Henry.

Will this Manchester City team prove once again to be too good?
