Manchester City vs Watford betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Watford prediction: Manchester City 4-1 Watford

After a catastrophic display from Manchester City last weekend, the Premier League champions must bounce back and quickly.

They’ve only lost back-to-back Premier League games under Pep Guardiola twice and can not afford to do so for a third time.

They’re up against a buoyant Watford team though after the Hornets came from behind last weekend.

Will this be a routine home win?

Manchester City vs Watford: Who will win?

As ever, Manchester City are huge favourites to win this one at 1/8.

Watford have lost their last 11 meetings with Manchester City by an aggregate of 38-6, including that 6-0 defeat in last season’s FA Cup Final.

They are a huge 16/1 to beat Man City for the first time since 1989.

Even a draw would be an amazing result for the visitors and that is 7/1.

Over 2.5 goals is 2/7.

Both teams to score is 5/6.

Manchester City to win and over 2.5 goals is 1/3.

Manchester City to win and over 3.5 goals is 8/11.

Manchester City to win and both teams to score is 5/4.

Sergio Agüero is the joint-top scorer in the Premier League with seven. He is 5/2 to score first and 8/15 to add to his tally.

Raheem Sterling is just two behind. He is 14/5 to break the deadlock and 8/13 to add to his tally.

Gerard Deulofeu could be Watford’s main goal threat. Although, he is 18/1 to score first and 5/1 to net anytime.

Both Sterling and Agüero to score is 13/8.

Both Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus to score is 16/5.

Both İlkay Gündoğan and Bernardo Silva to score is 8/1.

Both Roberto Pereyra and Gerard Deulofeu to score is 66/1.

Nobody saw that coming.

Last Saturday, Manchester City travelled to Carrow Road to face Championship champions Norwich City.

A thoroughly routine away victory was not only anticipated but expected.

However, Norwich burst out of the traps and were 2-0 in front after just 28 minutes.

That was just the second time Man City had conceded twice in the opening half-hour of a Premier League match under Pep Guardiola.

In first half, stoppage time, Sergio Agüero nodded home a goal back.

With the score 2-1 at the break, a Manchester City comeback felt ominous.

That’s certainly not what transpired though.

Just five minutes after the interval, Nicolás Otamendi dallied on the ball, had his pocket picked and Norwich had a third.

Rodri did fire home his first goal for the club late on but it wasn’t enough as they were beaten 3-2.

That was their first defeat against a newly-promoted club since March 2015 at Burnley having been unbeaten in 25 such matches since then.

Tactically, Norwich condensed the middle of the pitch and forced Manchester City to cross the ball from wide areas.

In that game, Man City crossed the ball 31 times and in the six Premier League matches under Guardiola they’ve crossed the ball the most, they’ve drawn two and lost the other four.

Something for Watford to potentially exploit?

In mid-week, Manchester City were given the opportunity to respond as they travelled to Kharkiv to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

They eased to a 3-0 win; the perfect start in Europe.

Back in the Premier League, they’re now five points behind Liverpool already, making this a must win.

Can Watford upset the odds?

Roberto Pereyra

As for Watford, Quique Sánchez Flores is back and so is the optimism at Vicarage Road.

Last weekend, in his first game of his second spell in charge, the Hornets hosted Arsenal.

However, it was not going to plan as the visitors were 2-0 up at half time.

But, nine minutes into the second period, Tom Cleverley pulled one back after a defensive collapse by Arsenal.

Then, in the final ten minutes, Roberto Pereyra was fouled before getting up and cooly converting the resulting spot-kick.

2-2 it finished and, in the end, Watford felt disappointed that they had not gone on and won the game.

2% of shots in the Premier League this season to date came from Watford in the second half of that match.

Many blame Arsenal’s slackness at the back for this but, from a Watford point of view, they need to take confidence from that performance.

Nevertheless, in the bigger picture, they’re still in a bit of trouble.

The Hornets have just two points so far meaning they have failed to win any of their opening five league matches of a season since 2011-12 back when they were in the Championship.

They finished 11th in the second-tier that season.

The Championship is where they most certainly do not want to be come next season.

It’s a shame that it’s unlikely they’ll be able to carry on that momentum as this is such a tough game.

Can they upset the odds?

As Manchester City were in action in Kharkiv as recently as Wednesday night, Pep Guariola is expected to name a few changes.

As always, Ederson will be in goal; he’s kept 51 clean sheets in 105 Manchester City appearances to date.

There is a real shortage of centre-backs.

Aymeric Laporte is out for six-month and, on Tuesday, it was confirmed John Stones will be out for five weeks.

Fernandinho covered there on Wednesday and is expected to continue to do so.

Benjamin Mendy made his first appearance of the season off the bench in mid-week but is unlikely to start here.

They may have numerous defensive issues but, they’re still frightening going forward.

Both Silvas, David and Bernardo, were rested in the Champions League but both are likely to come in here.

Riyad Mahrez and either one of Rodri or İlkay Gündoğan will drop out

Up front, last weekend Sergio Agüero became only the third player to score in a team’s first five Premier League matches of a season.

The other two players to achieve this are José Antonio Reyes for Arsenal in 2004 and Wayne Rooney for Manchester United in 2011.

The Argentine has scored with all seven of his shots on target in the Premier League this season.

This side should blow Watford away.

Quique Sánchez Flores meanwhile is likely to name the same side that took on Arsenal six days ago.

Ben Foster will be in goal.

He’s conceded ten goals already this season, only two Premier League goalkeepers have let in more.

In defence, Craig Dawson is expected to keep his place ahead of Craig Cathcart.

Kiko Femenía will continue at right-back at Daryl Janmaat’s expense.

In midfield, Tom Cleverley will continue alongside the regular pairing of Abdoulaye Doucouré and Étienne Capoue.

Despite scoring off the bench last weekend, Roberto Pereyra will be a substitute once more.

Up front, the hard-working Andre Gray will get the nod.

Summer signings Ismaïla Sarr and Danny Welbeck, who are both yet to start for Watford, will both have to wait a little bit longer.

Troy Deeney is still out with a knee injury.

Can this side cause a massive shock?

It seems unlikely.
