Premier League preview: Manchester City vs Tottenham

Manchester City’s quadruple dream fell apart on Wednesday evening as they crashed out of the Champions League.

VAR twice went against their favour to help Tottenham reach the last four of the competition.

Pep Guardiola will now need to pick his players up with Liverpool hot on their heels in the hunt for the Premier League title.

The Reds lead the way by just two points but the reigning champions hold a game in hand over them.

With just six fixtures remaining and given Liverpool’s favourable run-in, City can ill afford any slip-ups.

The next two games could prove decisive for Guardiola’s men with Manchester United next up after Spurs.

Tottenham decimated despite reaching Champions League last four

They will take on a decimated Tottenham side who dragged themselves over the line in midweek.

With his squad already thin and injuries mounting up, Mauricio Pochettino faces a tricky selection dilemma.

Having recovered from their blip a few weeks ago, the race for the top four is now closer than ever.

Four points separate them from 6th placed United and two from Chelsea in 5th, who have played a game more.

Meanwhile, bitter north London rivals Arsenal are just a point behind and host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Spurs have leeway to falter on Saturday but with their minds now on Europe and little chance to rotate, they face an anxious wait to book their place in the top four.

Champions League review: Manchester City (4) 4-3 (4*) Tottenham

In perhaps one of the greatest Champions League nights since Istanbul, Tottenham will play AFC Ajax in the competition’s last 4.

The second leg started off at a rate of knots with four goals being scored after just 11 minutes.

Raheem Sterling and Bernando Silva netted either side of a Heung-min Son brace with nobody watching having a chance to digest what was unfolding.

Sterling moments later found his second to bring City level but still trailing on aggregate due to the away goal rule.

With an hour on the clock, who else but Sergio Aguero turned the tie on its head to put the Premier League champions ahead.

But such was the chaos of the evening, Fernando Llorente ensured there was yet another twist in the tale.

The Spaniard latched on to Kieran Trippier’s corner with the ball being turned in off his thigh.

Despite a check on VAR for a potential handball, Tottenham once again led the tie on away goals.

Now for Spurs, it was a case of putting bodies on the line to defend the final ten minutes plus additional time.

They looked to have done it until a moment of madness from Christian Eriksen saw his pass intercepted on the edge of his own penalty area.

In the third minute of the five added on, Aguero squared the ball to Sterling who sold Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez and lashed home to send the home support into delirium.

But VAR wanted one final say on a tie it had so heavily influenced with a check for an offside in the build-up.

With both managers strewing their jackets off in utter disbelief, it started to become clear that all was not as it seemed.

After a few seconds of checking, City’s delight descended into dread as the screens displayed that the goal had been disallowed for offside against Aguero.

The full-time whistle was met with Mauricio Pochettino frantically embracing his coaching staff as they helped the north London club to reach their first Champions League semi-final.

Manchester City team news vs Tottenham

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Claudio Bravo are the only two players City will be without on Saturday.

Following the exhilarating seven-goal game on Wednesday, Guardiola could make several changes.

Leroy Sane could return to the line-up with Gabriel Jesus replacing Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine has been struggling with an injury and has looked off the pace over the past few weeks.

Erik Lamela is also due to be assessed after picking another injury during the warm-up at the Etihad.

Serge Aurier and Harry Winks will remain sidelined whilst Eric Dier and Vincent Janssen have returned to training.
