Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester City are unbeaten in 12 of their last 13 matches in the Champions League. They have won each of their last six home matches in the premier competition in Europe, scoring 26 goals in that period.

Manchester City are looking to secure top spot in the group while a win for Shakhtar could confirm their qualification into the knockout stage.

Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Who will win?

Manchester City are overwhelming 1/6 favourites to win while a Shakhtar victory is priced at 14/1. The draw can be backed at 6/1.

Expect goals in this one. Nine of Shakhtar’s last 10 matches in the Champions League have featured three of more goals. Bet on over 2.5 goals at 1/3.

Expected to lead the line on Tuesday, Gabriel Jesus is a fine option for first goal scorer. As is Raheem Sterling after his late VAR-ruled out goal against Chelsea.

Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk Champions League match preview

Manchester City host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad on Tuesday night in their penultimate Group C match.

Manchester City moved up to 3rd in the Premier League table after their 2-1 home win over Chelsea on Saturday. City had to come from behind after conceding the opening goal. Kevin de Bruyne’s deflected strike equalised for City before a stunning solo effort from Riyad Mahrez completed the comeback.

City were held to a 1-1 draw at Atalanta in their last Champions League match. Raheem Sterling’s early goal was cancelled out in the second half. An injury to Ederson and a red card for substitute goalkeeper Claudio Bravo meant that Kyle Walker had to play the final 10 minutes of the match as a goalkeeper.

The draw leaves City on 10 points, five above both Shakhtar and Dinamo Zagreb.

Shakhtar have a 13 point lead at the top of the Ukrainian top division following their 4-1 win over Lviv on Friday. Junior Moraes scored a hat-trick before Alan Patrick netted the final goal for Luis Castro’s side.

Shakhtar drew 3-3 at Dinamo Zagreb in their last Champions League match. Both sides finished with 10 men and four goals were scored after the 83rd minute. Dinamo Zagreb travel to bottom side Atalanta in the other Group C match on Tuesday.

Shakhtar will qualify with a win on Tuesday if Dinamo lose to Atalanta, due to Shakhtar’s head-to-head away goals superiority over Dinamo.

City and Shakhtar have been drawn against each other in three consecutive seasons. Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus were the goalscorers in City’s 3-0 win at Shakhtar in September’s reverse fixture.

Including the match in September, Manchester City have won their last three matches against Shakhtar by an aggregate score of 12-0. Shakhtar did, however, record a 2-1 home win over Man City in December 2017.

Manchester City team news vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Sergio Aguero will almost certainly miss out after picking up a muscle injury against Chelsea. The Argentine will be assessed ahead of next weekend’s trip to Newcastle. Gabriel Jesus is expected to lead the line on Tuesday night.

Midfielders Rodri and David Silva also limped off with cramp in Saturday’s win. While neither appears to be seriously injured, it’s likely that they’ll both be given a rest by Guardiola.

Phil Foden is back in contention after serving a one-match suspension in the Champions League. The teenager could start in midfield alongside Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan.

Despite his man-of-the-match performance against the Blues, Riyad Mahrez could be replaced in the starting eleven by Bernardo Silva, who just served a domestic ban.

Nicolas Otamendi comes back into contention and could challenge former Shakhtar man Fernandinho for a spot in defence.

Kyle Walker and Angelino were unused substitutes last time out and the full-backs will be hoping to benefit from Guardiola’s midweek rotation.

Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho are one booking away from a suspension.

Leroy Sane, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Aymeric Laporte are all long-term knee injury absentees.

Claudio Bravo is suspended following his red card against Atalanta.

Shakhtar Donetsk team news vs Manchester City

Marlos Bonfirm will serve a suspension after being sent off in Shakhtar’s last Champions League outing.

Maycon made his return from injury on Friday but is unlikely to start on Tuesday.

Yevhen Konoplyanka has missed the last two matches and is a major doubt with a groin injury.

Manor Solomon is out with a hamstring injury.

Sergiy Bolbat will miss Shakhtar’s last group match if he is booked on Tuesday.
