Manchester City vs Chelsea Premier League match preview

Manchester City’s latest title test sees them host Chelsea at the Etihad.

The two sides met as recently as December where Chelsea inflicted a 2-0 win over City at Stamford Bridge. Goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz threatened to seriously dent City’s title hopes.

A week ago, City were on the verge of going seven points behind Liverpool but now find themselves below the Reds by three points with a better goal difference – now that they have played the same amount of games.

City finally regained top spot with a 2-0 win at Everton on Wednesday night. Amyeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus scored for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Chelsea responded to their 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth with a 5-0 win over Huddersfield last weekend. Eden Hazard and January signing Gonzalo Higuain both scored braces before David Luiz rounded up the scoring.

The win lifted Chelsea up into the top four on 50 points, two above Manchester United. The Red Devils and Arsenal leap frogged the Blues with wins on Saturday.

If City score two or more goals on Sunday they will break the record for scoring at least two in the most consecutive Premier League matches (15).

While form favours City, history certainly favours Chelsea.Chelsea and City have met 43 times in the Premier League. Chelsea have won 25 times to City’s 11.

The Blues have done the double over Man City on more occasions than against any other side (10).

Chelsea are also statistically Guardiola’s least favourite opponents. Guardiola has lost to the Blues three times in the league, more than any other side.

Vincent Kompany remains sidelined without a return date. Nicolas Otamendi or John Stones will partner Amyric Laporte in defence.

Sergio Aguero is set to keep his place up top, despite Gabriel Jesus scoring off the bench at Goodison Park.
