Manchester City vs Atalanta betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Atalanta prediction: Manchester City 3-0 Atalanta

Atalanta are doing well domestically but they have struggled to adapt to life in the Champions League, losing the first two matches of their maiden campaign.

La Dea will be low on confidence after giving up a 3-0 halftime lead on Saturday.

Manchester City returned to winning ways at the weekend and will be looking to shore up top spot in Group C with another win on Tuesday.

Manchester City vs Atalanta: Who will win?

Manchester City have won their last five Champions League matches at home, scoring 21 goals and conceding four in that period. Manchester City are 1/6 favourites to win the match while Atalanta are 14/1. The draw is priced at 6/1.

Manchester City are yet to concede in the Champions League and have three clean sheets in their last four matches at the Eithad. Back Man City to keep a clean sheet at 6/5.

Sergio Aguero was rested on Saturday and should be raring to go. Aguero has eight goals in nine matches this season, although he hasn’t scored in his last three appearances. Aguero is 11/4 to open the scoring and 1/2 to score anytime.

Manchester City vs Atalanta Champions League match preview

Manchester City will be looking to make it three wins out of three when they host Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Shakhtar Donetsk host Dinamo Zagreb earlier in the evening in Group C’s other fixture.

Manchester City have won their last five Champions League matches at the Etihad.

Atalanta drew 3-3 with Lazio on Saturday after giving up a 3-0 halftime lead. Luis Muriel (2) and Alejandro Gómez were the first-half scorers.

They are 3rd in Serie A following Saturday’s draw, with 17 points from 8 matches. Atalanta are also the league’s leading goalscorers with 21 goals.

Likewise, no side has scored more Premier League goals than Man City this season (21). City gained two points on league leaders Liverpool this weekend. Pep Guardiola’s side were 2-0 winners at Crystal Palace while Liverpool were held to a draw at Old Trafford. Gabriel Jesus and David Silva scored the goals for City.

Man City top group C following their 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb last time out.

Atalanta’s only defeat in their last six away matches was their Champions League opener where they were beaten 4-0 at Dinamo Zagreb. They lost their second Group C match 2-1 at home to Shakhtar.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the first between these two sides. City last faced Italian opposition in the group stage of the 2011/12 Champions League, drawing 1-1 at home to Napoli before losing the away fixture 2-1 in Naples.

Atalanta won 5-1 at Goodison Park in the 2017/18 Europa League. They also played two pre-season friendlies on English soil against Norwich and Leicester.

Manchester City team news vs Atalanta

Pep Guardiola did not start a recognised centre-back at Crystal Palace and is expected to field a more conservative starting eleven.

In fairness to the Spaniard, City are short on central defenders right now. Nicolas Otamendi has a knock and is unlikely to be ready for Tuesday, while Aymeric Laporte is sidelined with a long-term knee injury.

Defensive midfield duo Rodri and Fernandinho started in the heart of defence, with John Stones presumably being kept fresh for Tuesday’s clash. Stones was brought on for the last 10 or so minutes against Palace. Spanish teenager Eric Garcia provides another option at the back.

Riyad Mahrez and fit-again Sergio Agüero were both unused substitutes and should start from the off. Agüero is on 99 UEFA career appearances.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was left out of the matchday squad at Crystal Palace entirely and will challenge Benjamin Mendy for the left-back starting berth.

Kyle Walker remains a doubt following a stomach bug. João Canćelo started on Saturday and could keep his place in the side.

Atalanta team news vs Manchester City

Atalanta were dealt a major blow over the international break when striker Duván Zapata picked up an abductor strain in an international friendly for Colombia, much to the annoyance of Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Zapata is Atalanta’s leading goalscorer this season with 7 goals in all competitions, including one in their 2-1 home defeat to Shakhtar in matchday 2.

Zapata’s compatriot Luis Muriel is set to deputise up front.

Josip Iličić could get the nod over Ruslan Malinovskiy for a spot on the right, while Remo Freuler will compete with Mario Pašalić for a spot alongside former fromer Boro midfielder Marten de Roon. De Roon scored a stoppage-time equaliser in Middlesbrough’s 1-1 Premier League draw at City in 2016.
