Manchester City face Lyon at the Estádio José Alvalade on Thursday for this UEFA Champions League Quarter Final match.

All remaining UEFA competition matches will be single-leg and played in neutral venues. Therefore, this match is being played at the home of the local Liga NOS team, Sporting Clube de Portugal, in Lisbon.

Manchester City’s path to the Quarter Finals saw them top Group C. Their group included fellow Champions League quarter-finalists Atalanta and Europa League quarter-finalists Shakhtar Donetsk. Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb completed Group C. City won the group while remaining undefeated.

The Citizens then met European Royalty in the Last 16, in the form of Real Madrid. Guardiola’s side won both legs by a 2-1 margin to see them through 4-2 on aggregate.

Lyon’s route to this stage in the competition was no less complicated. They finished as runners up in Group G to RB Leipzig with both Benfica and Zenit breathing down their necks, finishing just one point behind the French side.

Les Gones faced Italian champions Juventus in the last 16. Lyon managed to fend off another Cristiano Ronaldo knockout-stage miracle, limiting him to two goals in Turin to go through on away goals.

The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of Barcelona vs Bayern Munich here on the 19th of August. You can read our preview of that match here.

Manchester City FC vs Olympique Lyonnais: What are the betting odds?

Manchester City are one of three sides undefeated in this competition in 2019/20. They have won each of their last three matches and start the match as huge favourites, at 1/4.

The last head-to-head meeting between these sides ended in a 2-2 in Lyon last season. The odds of this match remaining tied after 90 minutes are 11/2.

Lyon have played only two competitive matches since March. They lost the French Coupe de la Ligue final on penalties to PSG at the end of July. Then, lost 2-1 in Turin last week. However, the French side still progressed due to the away goals rule.

This, coupled with their lack of competitive football in the last five months, sees Lyon start the match as huge outsiders, at 9/1.

Manchester City FC vs Olympique Lyonnais: Recommended bets

City’s joint-top scorers in the Champions League this season are Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, with six goals apiece.

Gabriel Jesus looks certain to start given Aguero’s injury. The 23-year old has five goals in his last three appearances in this competition. Therefore, it is no surprise to see him as the joint-favourite to get on the scoresheet at 8/11.

Eight of Jesus’ twenty-three goals this season have opened the scoring in the match. And you can back the Brazilian at 3/1 to grab the game’s opening goal here once more.

Raheem Sterling is City’s top-scorer this season in all competitions, with thirty-one goals. He scored the opening goal in the 2-1 win against Real Madrid last week. This marked Sterling’s twelfth opener of the campaign. He is 3/1 to grab the game’s opening goal here on Saturday. Or 8/11 to score at any time during the match.

Memphis Depay has been the main man for Lyon in the Champions League this campaign. He has six goals in the competition so far; one more than the rest of the Lyon players combined. Memphis is 4/1 to get on the scoresheet for Lyon here.

One-third of the Netherlands international’s goals this season have been the opening goal in the game. He is 14/1 to bag another opening goal on Saturday.

Manchester City FC vs Olympique Lyonnais: Match preview

City’s record against French sides in Europe isn’t great. They have only won once in five attempts. Although, you could look at it as having only lost once in five matches too.

They met Paris Saint-Germain at this stage of the competition in Manuel Pellegrini’s final season at the club. A 2-2 draw in Paris set them up nicely for a 1-0 win back at the Etihad to squeeze through into the Semi-Finals for the first and only time in their history, so far.

Their other appearances against French opposition both come against Saturday’s opponent, Lyon. The clubs met in the Champions League group stage last season, with City losing 1-2 at the Etihad. The Citizens fared a little better in Lyon, picking up a point with a 2-2 draw.

Olympique Lyonnais’ Elusive Midfielders

Lyon’s record against English opponents is the proverbial mixed bag. From their twenty-two encounters, they have seven wins, eight draws, and seven defeats. However, their record in the last five years is a very impressive three wins and a draw in four matches. As mentioned above, this includes a 1-2 win at the Etihad last season. The match highlighted the importance of press resistance in the modern game, particularly in midfield.

Throughout the first half, City struggled to get near the Lyon midfielders. Particularly Fekir and Aouar, who constantly evaded the press to get the ball in between or behind City’s lines to open them up on the counter.

City named a very attacking XI for the return match in Lyon with Aguero, Sterling, Sane, Mahrez, and Silva all starting. Yet once again, City struggled to deal with the press resistance of the Lyon players in the small spaces.

By the time Cornet scored in the second half, Lyon had already missed two big chances to score through Memphis and Cornet. Cornet had also seen a volley smash the crossbar. Cornet later added a second goal sandwiched by set-piece headers by City.

Guardiola has had two games warning him of the dangers of playing open and pressing high against this Lyon midfield. Will he adapt his game accordingly though?

Sergio Aguero

Manchester City FC team news vs Olympique Lyonnais

Leroy Sané will play no part in the competition for Manchester City. The left-winger completed a €45m move to Bayern Munich back in July.

His replacement, Ferran Torres, will also take no part in the match. Players must have been already registered and eligible to play for the club at the domestic level since 3 February to take part in the competition.

City’s newest defensive recruit, Nathan Ake, faces a similar situation to Torres. He must wait until next season to make his debut for the Citizens.

Sergio Agüero has not traveled with the squad to Portugal. The club has confirmed he is unlikely to feature in the remainder of the competition due to a knee injury.

Claudio Bravo had missed the last few games due to a muscular injury. However, he made a return to the bench for the Madrid match last week.

Benjamin Mendy missed the match against Madrid due to the accumulation of yellow cards. His return creates a three-way battle for the starting left-back slot. João Cancelo will believe he did enough to retain his place. But, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mendy will be hoping to benefit from Pep shuffling his deck.

Olympique Lyonnais team news vs Manchester City FC

Following Lyon’s match against Juventus, they have no fresh injury concerns in their squad.

Lucas Tousart hasn’t traveled with the rest of the squad to Portugal. The 23-year-old was sold to Hertha Berlin in January but loaned back to Lyon until the end of June. However, his exclusion here suggests Lyon have been unsuccessful in extending the deal until the conclusion of their Champions League campaign.

Martin Terrier also hasn’t traveled with the squad to Portugal. Lyon agreed to a deal for €12m with fellow Ligue 1 side Rennes for the twenty-three-year-old attacker.

With eight days between the Last 16 match against Juventus and their Quarter Final, it is likely Rudy Garcia will name almost the same XI that started against the Italian Champions in Turin.
