Man City stopper Benjamin Mendy has today revealed his opinion that he has the potential to become the best left-back in the world.
Powerful full-back Mendy arrived at the Etihad from French champions Monaco this summer, with the Citizens splashing out a world-record fee for a defender, £52 million.
Though Mendy has thus far struggled to gain full fitness in Manchester, he was instrumental in Monaco’s phenomenal campaign last season, racking up 11 assists across all competitions as the Principality outfit secured a shock Ligue 1 title and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The French international displayed the complete package of a modern day full-back at the Stade Louis, combining the ability to defend, blistering pace, powerful stature and immense crossing technique to devastating effect.
As a result, many viewed Mendy as one of the brightest young defenders in Europe, with the 23-year-old questioned on whether he could some day become the finest player in the world in his position during an interview with TeleFoot today:
‘No, it’s not completely mad (that I could be the best left-back in the world). Why not? There’s a long way to go, but by working, everything is possible.’
