Manchester City become second PL club to be dealt a pre-season blow as friendly against Troyes cancelled

Manchester City dealt a blow

Pep Guardiola’s pre-season plans have been dealt a blow, as Manchester City have been forced to cancel one of their friendlies.

The Sky Blues were due to fly to France to take on fellow City group side AS Troyes, but have had to cancel following a change in quarantine regulations between the UK and France.

As of Monday 19th July, travellers from France returning to England will have to quarantine for ten days, something that would have affected City’s pre-season even further.

In a statement on their website, the Manchester club said:

“Both clubs explored all avenues to be able to play the game, but the recent UK government changes to quarantine rules for travellers returning from France, has made the required restrictions too difficult to overcome.”

“Pep Guardiola’s first team squad will remain in Manchester and continue their pre-season preparations at the City Football Academy. There are no plans to replace the ESTAC friendly with another pre-season fixture.”

The cancellation means that Manchester City will play just one more non-competitive fixture – a behind closed doors affair against Preston North End – before they kick off their new season with a Community Shield clash against Leicester City.

Arsenal also cancel tour

Manchester City now become the second Premier League side to have their pre-season disrupted by the pandemic, with Arsenal having been forced to cancel their Florida Cup plans following positive Covid-19 tests within the Gunners’ camp.

As cases continue to mount in the UK, it does pose the question of just how affected the Premier League season may be this time around.
