Man United’s option to bring Wayne Rooney back from Everton

Wayne Rooney’s Man United return

If Man United fans thought Wayne Rooney’s move back to Everton was the last time the striker would represent the Red Devils, they are likely to be mistaken.

Rooney, who is United’s all-time record goalscorer, recently left Old Trafford after thirteen years at the club to head back to his boyhood club Everton.

Many have questioned whether Rooney is still good enough in recent seasons, however the forward showed he still has it with a long range golazo on his Everton debut this summer in Tanzania.

It’s now been revealed by the Times that United have an option to bring Rooney back to Old Trafford.

What’s the story?

Rather than being a return to Man United to play football, the option for Rooney’s return relates to the club’s future commercial and marketing opportunities. The Times reveal:

United inserted a clause into Rooney’s final contract at Old Trafford that stated the 31-year-old would be entitled to take on an ambassadorial role at the end of his playing career and it is understood that the offer is still on the table.

Will Man United fans welcome Rooney back to the club after he criticised the quality of the squad just last weekend?
