Man United’s new formation vs Leeds United

As note by the Times journalist Paul Hirst in his post-match breakdown of the Leeds game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tested out a new formation in the friendly.

In their pre-season opener against Perth Glory, Man United lined-up in a 4-3-3 formation.

However, against Leeds, OGS switched to a 4-2-3-1 system.

Impact on Paul Pogba

Paul Hirst commented on how the system change affected Paul Pogba’s role in the XI:

One consequence of playing 4-2-3-1 is that Paul Pogba has to play in a deeper role than he is used to.

(Against Leeds) he played for 45 minutes alongside Scott McTominay in a double-pivot in front of the back four.

Pogba complained about playing in that system under José Mourinho because he expected the Frenchman to stay deep and spray passes from in front of the back four, but Solskjaer is happy to give the 26-year-old more chance to get forward.

Romelu Lukaku update

Man United fans are yet to see Romelu Lukaku in action this summer.

Against Perth, Lukaku missed the game with a “niggle”, while Lukaku skipped the Leeds match due to a “knock”.

Lukaku has been linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer.

Man United are set to play in Singapore on Saturday.

After the Leeds game, Solskjaer had the following to say regarding Lukaku:

Of course it’s not ideal when you miss training sessions. He missed towards the end of the training session yesterday and he missed the game again today so he’s missed two chances to play 45 minutes.

At this stage of the season it’s important for us we get everyone fit so hopefully he’ll be available soon.
