Man United’s Nemanja Matic outlines targets for next season

Man United’s 2019/20

Manchester United’s 2019/20 campaign has been something of a mixed bag.

The first half of the season proved especially poor from a Red Devils perspective.

However, the arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January, coupled with the returns of Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba following football’s return in June, really helped to turn United’s season around.

And whilst they did, in the end, limp over the line somewhat, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men nevertheless managed to clinch a third-place finish in the Premier League, a feat which, of course, means they will be plying their trade in the Champions League next term.

Elsewhere, United’s semi-final exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Chelsea will not be an occasion which the Reds (in particular David de Gea) will be too keen to look back on.

However, the Manchester giants still have one final shot at silverware this season, as they are going strong in the Europa League.

What a way to finish the PL season @championsleague we are back

Matic’s target for 2020/21

A 3rd-place finish and shot at the Europa League won’t prove sufficient for one Man United player moving forward, though.

Nemanja Matic, who has been on the Red Devils’ books since the summer of 2017, has recently been discussing his ambitions for next season, during an interview with the club’s official website.

And despite his side having finished a staggering 33 points adrift of eventual champions Liverpool this term, Matic wants to win the Premier League, or at the least see United fight for the title, in 2020/21:

“Me, personally, I would like to win the Premier League with Manchester United. I think that our club always needs to fight for the title.

“We always need to try to do the best for this club, which we are doing at the moment, and I think we cannot allow any club to win the league seven or 10 games before the season finishes. So we have to fight until the end.

“Of course, we have a young team, but this cannot be an excuse. I think these young players already have a few seasons behind them playing. So, from the next season, we have to fight for the title. I don’t know if we’re going to win [it] but I’m sure that we can fight until the end.

“That’s my personal target and I think the rest of my team-mates think the same.”
