Man United’s Mario Mandzukic boost plus Red Devils’ option to re-sign Lyon’s Memphis Depay confirmed

Man United’s Mario Mandzukic boost

Rumours linking Man United to Mario Mandzukic have been around for months.

Man United’s attacking options shrunk in the summer, when Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku both joined Inter Milan.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main attacking options at Old Trafford right now.

Mandzukic is 33-years-old, and he’s out of favour at Juventus since Maurizio Sarri took over.

Last season, the Croat scored 9 goals and chipped in with six assists in 25 Serie A matches.

Back in October, Italian daily Tuttosport claimed that Manchester United had reached a verbal agreement to sign Mario Mandzukic from Juventus in January.

Of course, a verbal agreement isn’t the same as an actual commitment to sign the Croatian.

Today, Italian paper La Stampa have reported that Mandzukic is still determined to join Man United.

Moreover, it’s also reported that Juventus Sporting Director Fabio Paratici would be willing to sell Mandzukic to United for a “a few million euros”.

The La Stampa update will raise expectations that Mandzukic will move to Old Trafford in the new year.

But is Mandzukic really the type of player who can turn United’s season around?

Is Mandzukic a better option than Lukaku?

AC Milan & Zlatan Ibrahimovic

This week, rumours suggested that AC Milan could challenge Man United for Mandzukic.

However, that suggestion appears to have receded following La Gazzetta dello Sport’s claim that Milan are interested in re-signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

GdS say that Milan have already started talks with Ibra’s agent Mino Raiola about the possible San Siro return.

Red Devils option to re-sign Lyon’s Memphis Depay confirmed

Could Memphis Depay return to Man United?

Depay’s contract at Lyon expires in 2021, while Dutch news outlet Voetbalzone today confirm that Depay has no intention of staying with OL for the remainder of his career.

Voetbalzone also report that Lyon Sporting Director Juninho is planning to hold talks with Depay about extending his current contract with the Ligue 1 side.

In addition, Voetbalzone publish a quote from Juninho, confirming that Man United have an option to re-sign Depay. Juninho said:

Manchester United has the first option to buy back Memphis Depay if other clubs have interest.

To be clear, there’s nothing to suggest that Man United intend to exercise this option at this time.
