Ashley Young

Man United fans can’t quite believe Ashley Young’s heroics vs Watford

Supporters of Manchester United have taken to social media in their droves this evening to heap praise on surprise hero Ashley Young following his first-half showing versus Watford.

Jose Mourinho’s side travelled to Vicarage Road for a (seemingly) tough clash with the in-form Hornets this evening, with the trio of Marcos Rojo, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again included in their squad following lengthy injury layoffs.

The Red Devils came into proceedings on the back of a surprisingly hard-fought victory over Chris Hughton’s Brighton at the weekend, earning two wins and two draws from their last four fixtures across all competitions.

Watford, meanwhile, put a shaky run of form behind them with impressive wins over both West Ham and Newcastle over the last two weeks, with Marco Silva’s side sitting in 8th-place in the Premier League table.

The starting lineups of both clubs saw Marcos Rojo restored to United’s XI in a 3-man backline, having been rested at the weekend following his excellent performance versus Basel in the Champions League last week.

Paul Pogba also shook off a knock to start, with Jesse Lingard replacing Marcus Rashford in Jose Mourinho’s lineup.

Marco Silva, meanwhile, made just 1 change from his side’s 3-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday, with Sebastian Prödl replacing Miguel Britos at the heart of the Hornets’ defence:

At the double

An end-to-end opening to the clash saw Watford look dangerous on the break, with Kiko Femenia, Richarlison and Andre Grey particularly bright.

However, an individual moment of brilliance from the visitors soon lit up proceedings, as Ashley Young’s sweet half volley from nothing on the edge of Watford’s box put United ahead after 20 minutes.

And, to the amazement of viewers watching on, it was soon 2-0, with that man Ashley Young once again the difference-maker.

After a surging run from Paul Pogba eventually saw the Frenchman grounded 25 yards from goal, Young stepped up to curl the most magnificent of free-kicks past the helpless Heurelho Gomes in Watford’s goal.

The crowd at Vicarage Road were shellshocked, as were fans of Manchester United, who quickly took to Twitter to sing the praises of their shock hero:

Running away with it

Anthony Martial has since made it 3-0, slotting home confidently following a perfectly-weighted layoff from Romelu Lukaku.
