Man United v Everton: Premier League preview

Manchester United host Everton in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Man United were held to yet another home draw on the weekend. Despite their domination they couldn’t find a way past an organised West Brom side.

There have now been eight 0-0 draws at Old Trafford since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, while there were 0 in the four years prior to that. The disappointing result extended United’s unbeaten run in the league to 19 matches.

Everton suffered a 3-1 loss at Anfield in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday. Surprise inclusion Matthew Pennington equalised for the Toffees before Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi sealed the three points for Liverpool.

A win for Everton would see them leapfrog both Arsenal and Man United into fifth, although Ronald Koeman’s side have played two more matches than their rivals.

The sides drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture back in December. A late goal from the penalty spot from Leighton Baines cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener.

Team news: Zlatan’s return

Ibrahimovic will return following a four match suspension for elbowing Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings.

Ander Herrera will also return having been suspended for the last two matches.

Paul Pogba has a chance of returning. The midfielder was spotted warming up on the Old Trafford pitch after Saturday’s match.

Jose Mourinho expected defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling and Spaniard Juan Mata to all be out of action for a “long time”.

Luke Shaw is unlikely to be involved after being on the end of heavy criticism from Mourinho. The Man United boss described Shaw’s focus, ambition and commitment as being a “long way behind” that of Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind.

As for Everton, Morgan Schneiderlin is out with a calf strain.

James McCarthy is expected to miss out again with a hamstring problem, while Mo Besic, Yannick Bolasie, Ramiro Funes-Mori and Seamus Coleman are all long-term absentees.
