Longstaff’s lack of game time
Sean Longstaff was only promoted to Newcastle’s senior side this past season.
Longstaff was then given his debut shortly after being promoted to the Magpies’ first-team. He played 17 minutes in a 4-0 loss vs Liverpool.
After that sub appearance, Rafael Benitez then benched Longstaff vs Man United before starting him in the next eight Premier League outings.
Unfortunately, Longstaff then suffered a knee injury that saw him miss the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.
Man United & Longstaff
Despite his very limited game time, though, Manchester United have still been linked with a move for Longstaff.
After the first round of links, Longstaff spoke about his future, and claimed that he was 100% committed to Newcastle:
“I’m massively flattered to have my name even mentioned in those conversations but like I said, I’m 100% focused on Newcastle and trying to get fit and get back in the team here.
“For me it’s nice to be have said about you and be linked with top clubs but for me, this is what I’ve always wanted to do.
“I’ve always wanted to play for Newcastle and I’ve only had a little taste of that so for me, it’s about getting fit as soon as I can and getting back on the pitch for Newcastle and making more memories of the future.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.
But a report from the Mirror then emerged which claimed that Longstaff was considering his future due to Rafa Benitez departing St. James’ Park.
Now, the Telegraph have provided a fresh update on Man United’s alleged pursuit of Longstaff.
According to the Telegraph, Man United have been left stunned by Newcastle’s £50m valuation of the midfielder.
The Red Devils are said to value Longstaff at around £18-20m.
