Rashford & Hegazi: West Brom 1 - Man United 2

Man United star slammed for simulation vs West Brom

Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford has this evening been slated online for an act of simulation during his side’s victory over West Brom.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at the Hawthorns earlier today, with United coming into proceedings on the back of a surprisingly hard-fought 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford during the week.

With Manchester City having dispatched of Tottenham so impressively last night, though, the pressure was on Jose Mourinho’s men to pick up all 3 points this afternoon, in an attempt to keep an even-remotely respectable gap between themselves and their fierce rivals atop the Premier League table.

West Brom, meanwhile, had incredibly not managed a league victory since the 2nd day of the campaign, with Alan Pardew having been brought at the end of last month in in a bid to improve their fortunes.

A 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace was since followed by a hugely disappointing loss to Swansea City, though they did earn major plaudits for their performance last time out, a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Teams

2-1

Romelu Lukaku continued his recent resurgence with the opener this afternoon, brilliantly nodding home Marcus Rashford’s whipped cross after 27 minutes to give the visitors the lead.

And it was soon 2-0, as Jesse Lingard’s deflected strike 8 minutes later looked to have put the game to bed as a contest.

However, the hosts rallied in the 2nd-half, with Gareth Barry’s scrappy finish following a Baggies corner breathing life into the Hawthorns for a hectic finish.

The Red Devils held on for all 3 points in the end, though, keeping the gap between the Premier League’s top two at 11 points.

Slated

Aside from the 3 goals, there were several flashpoints on show over the course of the 90 minutes this afternoon, with a strong penalty shout turned down for the hosts, Gareth Barry seemingly stamping on David De Gea’s heel, and a moment of embarrassing simulation from Marcus Rashford.

The latter of these moments has since resulted in widespread condemnation from both supporters of United and other clubs, after gifted English youngster Rashford threw himself to ground under absolutely minimal contact with the arm of Baggies stopper Ahmed Hegazi.

Hegazi extended his arm to hold Rashford off as the pair tussled for the ball, with a slight connection made with the latter’s chin.

Rashford, though, went to ground as if he had been clattered by Hegazi, before chasing after the Egyptian and eventually picking up a yellow card for his troubles.
