Manchester United star hailed for ‘instant impact’ vs Huddersfield

Manchester United’s fans have this evening showered praise on midfielder Paul Pogba, after the Frenchman’s immediate influence off the bench put the club’s clash with Huddersfield to bed.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at Old Trafford, with hosts United coming into proceedings on the back of a hugely disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of Tottenham during the week, a result which brought to an end a run of 5 straight wins for the Red Devils.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, had picked up just 1 win from their last 9 fixtures across all competitions before today, with the Terriers’ last outing ending in a harrowing 3-0 defeat at home to Liverpool.

Teams

The key talking point ahead of kick-off this afternoon came when the team-sheets for each side were released.

For Manchester United, none of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford or Phil Jones were included, with Jose Mourinho ringing the changes following his side’s abysmal showing at Wembley during the week:

Huddersfield boss David Wagner, meanwhile, made 3 changes of his own, with Tommy Smith, Rajiv van La Parra and Collin Quaner all handed starts:

Frustrated

The early goings of this afternoon’s clash unsurprisingly saw hosts United on top, with Jose Mourinho’s men holding the vast majority of possession and looking dangerous through the likes of Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez.

However, the Red Devils failed to find the net over the course of a frustrating opening 45 minutes, with the main talking point surrounding the decision of referee Stuart Attwell to not award a penalty to United after Terriers’ stopper Terence Kongolo clattered into Scott McTominay in the home side’s box.

2-0

The second-half was a different story, though, as the dominance on the part of the Red Devils saw them justly rewarded with an opening goal after 55 minutes through Romelu Lukaku.

An air of nervousness remained around Old Trafford in the immediate aftermath of Lukaku’s opener, though, with the United faithful desperate for a second goal to put the clash firmly to bed.

Paul Pogba was introduced by Jose Mourinho with 65 minutes on the clock in a bid to kill of any Huddersfield hopes of a point, and the Frenchman took just 2 minutes to set the hosts up to do just that, with a pinpoint, long-range pass to Juan Mata, leading to Alexis Sanchez being taken down in the Huddersfield box.

Sanchez stepped up to take the ensuing spot-kick, seeing his initial effort saved by Jonas Lössl before tucking home the rebound.

Difference-maker

But it was all about the impact made by Pogba, with Manchester United’s fans immediately pointing to the brilliance of their star midfielder in the aftermath of their side’s second goal:
