According to a report from the Daily Mail this afternoon, Premier League giants Manchester United had representatives present at Lazio’s Europa League clash with Red Bull Salzburg last Thursday night, with all eyes on midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
Milinkovic-Savic, a 23-year-old Serbian international, arrived at Lazio from Genk in the summer of 2015 with weighty expectations on his young shoulders.
He initially struggled to adapt to life in the Italian capital, but began to find his feet midway through his first season, before announcing himself onto the world stage with a number of phenomenal performances for Simone Inzaghi’s men both last season and this.
His incredible engine and eye for goal led a number of Serie A sides to express an interest in Savic’s services last summer, but Biancocelesti President Claudio Lotito proved characteristically stubborn during negotiations.
Rumours began to circulate towards the end of the summer that interest in Savic spanned beyond the confines of Italy, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola named as a huge admirer of the talents of the all-action Serbian star.
These reports have since been backed by a number of Italian media outlets, who claim that City will launch a big-money bid for Savic this summer.
Manchester United, PSG and Juventus have been named as the other leading contenders for the Lazio man, with reports in the English press late last year claiming that the former of these sides are now readying a blockbuster offer of their own worth around 100 million Euro for the Serb.
And, as per the aforementioned update this afternoon, United are said to have had scouts scouts present at Lazio’s Europa League quarter-final second-leg clash with Red Bull Salzburg last Thursday night, in a bid to get a closer look at Savic.
The Red Devils’ representatives are unlikely to have been impressed by what they witnessed, though, with the midfielder having been largely anonymous over the course of the 90 minutes, as Lazio capitulated to fall to a 4-1 defeat and subsequent exit from the competition.
Nevertheless, United are not thought to have been deterred, with Savic being eyed as one of two midfield additions at Old Trafford this summer.
