Newcastle & Sean Longstaff
2018-19 was a breakthrough season for Sean Longstaff at Newcastle United.
A 21-year-old midfielder who developed in the Newcastle academy, Longstaff’s progression was one of the highlights of Newcastle’s season.
Longstaff got his chance to impress at St James’ Park midway through the season.
That coincided with injury problems for Jonjo Shelvey, while Ki Sung-yueng had departed Newcastle to play for South Korea at the Asian Cup.
In total, Longstaff made 12 Premier League appearances for the Toon.
Longstaff scored his first goal for Newcastle in a 2-0 win over Burnley.
His season was ended by a knee ligament injury suffered against West Ham in March.
Manchester United ready transfer bid
According to the Times, Manchester United will try to sign Longstaff this summer.
The assumption is that Longstaff is being viewed as a successor to Ander Herrera in the United setup.
Man United fans may wonder what the implication of chasing Longstaff is on current squad players like Fred.
Wasn’t the 50 million pound Brazilian supposed to be Man United’s next defensive midfield enforcer?
Either way, the Times today report the following:
United are expected to make a bid for Newcastle United’s 21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff in the next few days.
Newcastle insist that Longstaff is not for sale but United will test their resolve by making an official approach for the player.
For what it’s worth, the Telegraph also reports on Man United’s interest in signing Longstaff this Wednesday.
Interestingly, neither the Times nor Telegraph indicate how much Man United will have to offer to convince Newcastle to sell.
Longstaff is under contract at St James’ Park until 2022.
