Man United strain
Is this the beginning of the end for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United? It would appear as though cracks are beginning to show in the relationship between the players and the coach after the 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield.
The Mirror report that relations are strained because players feel that Mourinho went over the top in his criticism after the game. Mourinho is not known for being a wallflower at press conferences.
This time the subject of his ire was his own players. Ander Herrera was one who was singled out.
Mourinho said: “I heard Herrera in the flash interviews saying the attitude and desire was poor. Oh, my God.
“When a player says that, when a player feels that, I think they should all go to the press conference and explain why, because I cannot explain that.”
This is isn’t the first time that Mourinho has criticised his own players during this spell at United. Despite claiming on more than one occasion that he loves his squad, he’s clashed with the likes of Luke Shaw behind the scenes.
Shaw’s career at United looks to be effectively over and his relationship with Mourinho is a big part of that.
Jose Mourinho never sticks around at clubs for long but usually makes it to the third season before he bails. Or rather, before he’s forced to leave. In the short term, Mourinho is capable of achieving wonderful things.
He can inspire his troops to develop an us-against-the-world mentality and triumph with it. However, after more than two seasons that can grate. Perhaps it’s come into effect a little earlier at United.
Or perhaps this is simply a wobbly patch and all will be well when results pick up.
United have been playing ugly football for several weeks now and the players probably want more freedom.
