Man United one signing away from challenging for Premier League – Neville

Phil Neville has recently been discussing what Manchester United need in order to challenge for the Premier League title.

Man United on the up

Since Sir Alex Ferguson departed Old Trafford, Man United’s fall from grace has been rather dramatic.

The Red Devils have been through a number of high-profile managers and players alike, in a bid to return to their former glories.

For the most part, though, especially in the league, United have failed to do so.

However, recent months have appeared to suggest that the Manchester giants are once again on the up.

After a bit of a blip during the first half of 2019/20, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to be getting the best out of United’s squad.

And following their FA Cup victory over Norwich on Saturday, the Red Devils’ unbeaten run across all competitions was extended to 14 games.

One more signing needed

But whilst this kind of form is certainly impressive, United do not look to be the finished article just yet.

Yes, 14 games unbeaten is a superb feat, but it is worth noting that United are still only 6th in the Premier League table, and a whopping 37 points adrift of champions Liverpool.

As a result, one would think that the Old Trafford powerhouse need at least a few more additions to start challenging the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, as mentioned above, Phil Neville is of the opinion that United are actually much closer than fans might think when it comes to being able to challenge for England’s most coveted prize.

When speaking to Premier League Daily about how close Solskjaer is to completing a rebuild in Manchester, Neville stated:

“I think one more signing.

“You think about Liverpool signing [Virgil] Van Dijk and Alisson in goal.

“One or two more signings or [Paul] Pogba and one more signing playing to their absolute best. I think United can get closer.”

Then, when the ex-full-back was pressed on which area he thinks his former side need to reinforce when the transfer window reopens, Neville mentioned the centre-back spot – before reiterating that once Man United secure one top signing, they will be capable of challenging:

“Centre-back, you look at the impact Van Dijk had.

“Maguire has had a really strong impact but another real strong centre-back.

“They’ve still got to be defensively sound. One more signing and United can challenge.”
