“Mourinho has expressed his confidence in me”

Once again, Manchester United winger Memphis Depay was thrown on to rescue some points for his club on Sunday.

Not for the first time, Memphis Depay failed to come up with the goods as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke.

It may have only been a six minute cameo versus the Potters, but besides FC Midtjylland in the Europa League last season, it is difficult to think of a time when Memphis Depay did make an impact for Manchester United.

Depay has joined up with the Holland international team for games against Belarus and France – both huge World Cup qualifiers after they failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

“The level has become higher”

Whilst in Holland, Depay has given an interview to MetroNieuws where he appears to take aim at Louis van Gaal.

On the 2016/2017 season, Depay says: “The training sessions are going well, I’m sharp and fit. But that applies to everyone. The level has become higher. Jose Mourinho is a top coach.”

Depay is then asked about his first season at Manchester United, under Louis van Gaal: “The feeling is different. Mourinho has expressed its confidence in me. Personally, but also in the press.”

MetroNieuws describe this themselves as a “smear” on Louis van Gaal. Despite the fact Manchester United’s last coach brought Depay into the Holland national team squad and to Old Trafford.

“I feel like a loaded gun”

They add that despite initially having great confidence in Depay, LVG’s relationship with Depay was significantly reduced over the past campaign.

When pressed on his first campaign at Manchester United, Depay said: “I’d rather not talk about last season. That happened – about what I could have done better, it is clear – I should have played better.”

He was then asked about the new Manchester United squad, led by Galacticos Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba: “I am the same person and I know what I want. A supporting role is not for me. I’m not a player who is happy with the fact that he is under contract with Manchester United. This is my dream club, but I want to play.”

Depay continues: “I feel like a loaded gun but I have to wait for my chance in the first team. I am at my dream club and I want to fight for my place.”

Finally, Depay is asked about his relationship with the most expensive player on the planet, Paul Pogba: “Paul and I have known each other for a while. But it is a man’s sport, it’s not as if I need to be comforted. I am still convinced of my abilities.”
