Europa League player of the week
On Friday morning, UEFA have released their eight man shortlist for their Europa League player of the week.
After an opening round defeat away at Feyenoord, Manchester United got their campaign up and running on Thursday night at Old Trafford as they eeked a 1-0 win over Ukrainian minnows Zorya.
The only goal of the game came from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second half.
In general it was another disappointing performance from Jose Mourinho’s men, yet midfielder Juan Mata has been picked by UEFA as one of their EL stars of the week.
Who else was picked?
In the same week he turned 40, AS Roma star Francesco Totti was named in the list despite not scoring in the 4-0 win over Astra Giurgiu.
Aleksandr Kokorin scored twice for Zenit in a 5-0 win over AZ Alkmaar, but it was midfielder Giuliano who was singled out by UEFA.
Also included were Fenerbahce’s Jeremain Lens, Sparta Prague’s Vaclav Kadlec, Bilbao’s Benat Etxebarria, APOEL striker Vander, and finally Shakhtar Donetsk’s Viktor Kovalenko.
