Nemanja Vidic rejected Rafa Benitez

Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2006, Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic became a Manchester United legend during his 8-and-a-half year spell in the Premier League.

Having retired from professional football in January 2016, the 34-year-old gave an exclusive interview to FourFourTwo in which he admitted that he nearly joined Liverpool instead.

Nemanja Vidic claimed that Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez wasn’t decisive enough whilst Sir Alex Ferguson moved quickly and completed a deal within two days.

“I nearly went to Liverpool”

Speaking exclusively in the September 2016 issue of FourFourTwo, Vidic said “Yes. Rafa Benitez called me and I nearly went there. I was interested in going but my English wasn’t good and I was struggling to communicate.”

“Then Manchester United came. Fergie called me at my apartment and said: ‘I watched you play for Serbia against France – I want you here’. United were decisive. Everything was done very quickly, within two days.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

At Anfield – and without Rio Ferdinand by his side – Vidic surely wouldn’t have won five Premier League titles and a Champions League winners medal to boot!
