As per a report from French outlet L’Equipe, Manchester United view Monaco starlet Benoit Badiashile as a potential alternative target to Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.
United’s defensive struggles
On the back of a hugely-underwhelming campaign last time out, Ed Woodward and co. are currently in the process of rebuilding the Manchester United squad.
One area of particular concern for the Red Devils throughout 2018/19, meanwhile, was the club’s shaky backline.
The latest in a string of disappointing respective individual seasons from the likes of Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Eric Bailly saw United struggle to hold opposing sides at bay on a near-weekly basis.
This eventually resulted in the Manchester giants conceding a hefty 54 league goals, the most of the English top-flight’s top 9 clubs, and more than a United side had ever previously conceded during a Premier League campaign.
If ever you wanted to know how bad things are at United, a defender has just won our Player of the Year in the same season we’ve conceded the most goals we’ve ever conceded in the history of the Premier League.

Badiashile to Old Trafford?
As such, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have since inevitably been linked with a number of potential defensive reinforcements.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has of course already made the move to Old Trafford from Crystal Palace.
And next on the wishlist of the United hierarchy is said to be a central defender.
To this point in the summer, the stopper most persistently-linked with the Red Devils has been Leicester City stalwart Harry Maguire.
As per the aforementioned report from L’Equipe, though, in the case that a move for the English international proves too expensive, Manchester United have identified a viable alternative.
The player in question is Monaco starlet Benoit Badiashile.
18-year-old centre-half Badiashile broke into the first-team ranks at the Stade Louis for the first time last season, going on to notch an impressive 20 Ligue 1 starts, despite his tender years.
The French U19 international is already viewed as one of the finest young talents in his home country, with his performances over the course of the 2018/19 campaign having seemingly caught the eye of a number of clubs across Europe.
United are said to have been monitoring Badiashile for several years now, with the Red Devils holding a keen interest in the teen’s signature.
Both Wolves and Valencia, though, are also in the hunt.
Monaco, meanwhile, would reportedly demand a fee of around £30 million for Badiashile.
