Man United hope to complete Aaron Wan-Bissaka signing ‘within 48 hours’ – Standard

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

As per a report from the Evening Standard, Manchester United are hopeful of securing Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s signature from Crystal Palace this weekend.

Palace star

Wan-Bissaka, a 21-year-old right-back, emerged as one of the Premier League’s most impressive young players this past season.

The English U21-international came up through the youth ranks of Palace, before breaking into the first-team setup of the Eagles during the second-half of the 2017/18 campaign in the midst of an injury crisis.

And to say that Wan-Bissaka has since gone on to take advantage of the opportunity afforded to him by Roy Hodgson would be something of an understatement.

After appearing in 7 league outings between February and the end of the previous campaign, the gifted stopper subsequently went on to start in 35 of Palace’s 38 Premier League fixtures this past season.

Wan-Bissaka’s impressive physical attributes are fully matched by his abilities on the ball, with the fact that the youngster was generally deployed as a winger during his youth made evident by his frequent driving runs out of defence.

‘Dribbled past on just 6 occasions’

What makes the 21-year-old such a unique talent, though, is that, added to all of the aforementioned traits, Wan-Bissaka is a genuinely superb defender.

As was brought to light in an article from the respected in January, to that point in the season, Wan-Bissaka possessed the best tackle success rate across the top-5 leagues in Europe:

‘Of the 83 times that he has faced up an opponent this season, Wan-Bissaka has been dribbled past on just six occasions. This leaves a success rate of 92.8 per cent.’

Man United rejected

As such, news that several Premier League heavyweights are eyeing the Palace starlet’s signature has come as little surprise.

All of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have been named as keen suitors of Wan-Bissaka of late.

United, though, have been by far the most-persistently linked, with the Red Devils on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.

Wan-Bissaka has seemingly been identified as the ideal solution, as evidenced by reports of a number of United bids for the young stopper over recent weeks.

To this point, though, the Manchester powerhouse have been unable to find a deal with Palace:

‘Break the transfer record for a British defender’

But, as per the aforementioned update courtesy of the Evening Standard this afternoon, the board at Old Trafford remain optimistic regarding their chances of clinching an agreement, and coaxing Wan-Bissaka to the club.

In fact, the Red Devils are said to be confident of signing the Palace standout this weekend.

A fee, as things stand, is yet to be agreed, but the Standard’s Giuseppe Muro notes:

‘The deal is set to reach £60m and will break the transfer record for a British defender.’
