Man United ‘have made contact’ with Mauricio Pochettino over replacing Solskjaer

The latest word stemming from the English media suggests that Manchester United have approached Mauricio Pochettino over the possibility of becoming the club’s new manager.

Tottenham stint

Argentine tactician Pochettino is of course best remembered for his time spent in the Premier League.

Following a 3-year stint in charge of Espanyol, the 48-year-old opted to make the move to Southampton in 2013, before linking up with Tottenham a year later.

And it was his spell in north London which saw Pochettino go on to establish himself as one of the most highly-regarded managers in not only England, but all of Europe.

The former Argentinian international guided Spurs to top-4 finishes in four of his five seasons with the club, including a runners-up berth in 2016-17.

Poch’s crowning achievement, though, came two seasons ago, when, miraculously, he oversaw the Lilywhites’ run all the way to the final of the Champions League.

Old Trafford bound?

A dismal opening to the campaign last time out, however, saw loyalties cast aside by Tottenham, and Pochettino dismissed in November of 2019.

And, somewhat surprisingly, the South American has since remained out of work.

Pochettino has been linked with a whole host of top clubs, including the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid.

Recent reports stemming from Russia, meanwhile, went as far as to claim that the tactician was in active talks over a potential position at Zenit St. Petersburg.

As outlined above, though, it is a new suitor who this week appear to have positioned themselves firmly at the front of the queue for Poch’s services.

The outfit in question? Manchester United.

Much has been made of the situation on the bench at Old Trafford of late, with the Red Devils continuing to struggle for consistency under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

A run of 3 wins from 4, including impressive Champions League downings of both PSG and RB Leipzig, for example, was, over the last 4 days, followed by defeats to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Wednesday’s dismal display in Turkey has seen speculation surrounding Solskjaer’s future ramp up in a major way, as the United faithful demand someone be held responsible for the club’s woes.

In fact, some media outlets have gone as far as to suggest that, should he oversee a 3rd-straight defeat at Everton this weekend, the Norwegian tactician will be sacked.

And such claims would certainly appear to fall in line with the aforementioned claims regarding Pochettino.

As per an exclusive report from the Manchester Evening News, those in a position of power at Old Trafford have already approached the Argentine, ‘with a view to him replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s next manager.’

Pochettino’s representatives are said to have been contacted directly, with it added, significantly, that the former Tottenham boss remains highly interested in the role.
