Man United handed timely defender boost ahead of Atalanta clash

Premier League giants Manchester United have, on Friday, been afforded a timely boost on the personnel front.

Testing times

The last couple of weeks have of course proven far from straightforward on the red half of Manchester.

After being ousted from the League Cup at the hands of West Ham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men managed just a solitary victory across their ensuing three outings in all competitions, and even that came courtesy of a last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo effort versus Villarreal.

Adding ever further to the woes of the Red Devils, meanwhile, have been subsequent developments on the personnel front.

After Harry Maguire was struck down by a calf injury late last month, the United captain was joined on the sidelines by defensive partner Raphael Varane during the international break.

The summer arrival at Old Trafford limped out of France’s Nations League meeting with Spain, with medical tests having since confirmed a groin strain, which is expected to keep Varane on the sidelines for ‘a few weeks’.

AWB latest

In turn, ahead of their return to European action next week, Solskjaer and co. were, until today, facing up to the very real possibility of facing off against the ever-dangerous Atalanta without the services of three of the club’s first-choice back-4.

This came with right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka still suspended, owing to a straight red card picked up versus Young Boys on Champions League matchday 1.

As outlined above, though, on Friday, Manchester United have been handed an altogether timely defensive boost.

As confirmed by a host of sources online, Wan-Bissaka has seen his ban reduced from two games to one by UEFA, meaning he will in fact be eligible to face off against Atalanta next Wednesday.
