Phil Jones

Man United fans react to confirmation of Phil Jones’ new contract

Supporters of Manchester United have taken to Twitter in their droves this morning, to react to news of Phil Jones signing a new contract with the club.

United stint

Jones, a 26-year-old central defender who can also play at right-back, has been plying his trade at Old Trafford since 2011.

United splashed out a fee of around £16.5 million to secure his signature, after Sir Alex Ferguson had been impressed by the English international’s showings with boyhood club Blackburn Rovers.

And Jones has since gone on to rack up over 200 appearances in a Red Devils’ jersey, including 23 Premier League starts last season.

However, despite having showcased promise during the early years of his career at Old Trafford, particularly as a rampaging right-back, Jones has since failed to develop into the type of solid defensive presence that United had no doubt hoped for.

The 27-time capped international has enjoyed streaks of form during which his grit and determination have covered up for his defensive shortcomings, but, for the most-part, Jones’ shaky, mistake-riddled performances for the Red Devils have led to the widespread opinion among the club’s fans that the stopper simply isn’t of the required standard to play for United.
