Man United fans convinced Kalvin Phillips is the missing piece of their midfield puzzle following Croatia display

Man United fans convinced Kalvin Phillips is the missing piece of their midfield puzzle following Croatia display

Manchester United’s supporters have flooded to social media on Sunday evening, to call for the unlikely signing of Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips.

Sterling on target

Phillips was of course in action a short time ago, as England welcomed Croatia to Wembley, for their Euro 2020 opener.

Gareth Southgate’s men headed into proceedings as favourites to get their campaign off to a positive start, boasting a gifted up and coming squad, featuring the likes of Declan Rice, Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho.

And, when all was said and done, take a considerable step towards the tournament’s knockout rounds is precisely what the Three Lions managed.

A tightly contested affair, during which England carved out the majority of the chances, eventually saw a solitary Raheem Sterling strike make the difference.

Just shy of the hour mark, Kalvin Phillips cut inside from the right, before slipping Sterling in with an inch-perfect through ball. And the Manchester City attacker, from here, made no mistake, slotting beyond Dominik Livaković to secure all three points for the hosts.

Reds want Leeds star

Whilst it was Sterling, when all was said and done, who proved match-winner this afternoon, however, it is not the Citizens star who has since taken the majority of the plaudits in the game’s aftermath.

Instead, this honour has been bestowed upon the aforementioned Kalvin Phillips.

Upon their side’s starting XI being unveiled ahead of kick-off in London, many an England fan actually expressed their disappointment with Gareth Southgate opting for both Declan Rice and Phillips as part of his midfield.

To say that the latter subsequently went on to justify his inclusion, though, would be putting it lightly.

The Leeds star absolutely shone throughout the 90 minutes versus Croatia, more than holding his own up against the talents of Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic.

Phillips showcased the perfect balance of ability and grit, guile and an eye for a tackle.

And, as outlined above, the showing on the part of the 25-year-old was particularly appreciated by one set of club supporters.

Those in question? The Manchester United faithful.

The Red Devils have taken to social media in their numbers on Sunday afternoon, to suggest that Phillips would represent the ideal addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ranks in the middle of the park.
