The reason Memphis Depay flopped at Manchester United

Memphis Depay

The main man

Memphis Depay may have arrived at Old Trafford with a huge amount of expectation, but his time at the club was widely deemed a flop.

Since leaving United, the Dutchman has gone on to shine both for club and country.

He’s at the forefront of a great Holland side, and is scoring left right and centre.

Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks that Depay wants to be the main man – and the reason he struggled at United and in the number seven shirt was because he wasn’t the best player in the side.

The Express report he said:  “And he is the key man for the Dutch. He leads the line, and is enjoying being the main man.

“To take the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford, it was a big statement.

“He didn’t settle. It wasn’t for him and he seems to have found a home at Lyon.”

A Man United return?

One possibility is for Memphis to return to United.

His buy-back clause has been much discussed.

Mourinho is also a big fan of the player, and had plenty of kind words for the Dutchman when he left the club.

United fans also have a lot of time for Depay, and it could be the case that he returns to the club one day.

His form only seems to be improving, and players with huge talent often feel their horizons need to be broader than Ligue 1.
